Although other works on liturgy were written in the Netherlands during Kuypers era, none has the scope of Our Worship. In his discussion, he is careful to balance his appreciation of the Reformed tradition he was loyal to with his criticism of its worship practices, both in his own era and historically. Kuyper also provides here an instructive comparison with English and American worship practices, judging the one too detailed and soulless, and the other too casual and without dignity. He concludes that the proper middle way of form and dignity is found in the Reformed tradition.
Translator Harry Boonstra contributes an extremely useful outline of Kuypers life and a background on the history of the Reformed church to open the book and give a backdrop against which to view Kuypers words. Our Worship is important both as a history and for understanding the enormous influence Abraham Kuyper held and in many areas, continues to hold in Reformed thought.
