Publisher's Description

In the tradition of One Simple Act and God’s Guest List, perennial bestselling novelist Debbie Macomber reveals in inspiring, moving stories that the simplicity of one perfect word can become profound. When Debbie took the time to intentionally focus on a single word—such as prayer, trust, or surrender—for a whole year, this act changed not only herself, but those around her.

“The surprising thing is that when we decide to focus on one word for the year,” Debbie writes, “God takes part in the choosing. That’s why the word is perfect for us. We may not see it at the time, but as we look back we see that it all worked together—our word, our life, our journey.”

For example, the year she chose the word balance, her career moved to a whole new level. The pressures on Debbie to speak, promote, and practically live on the road were overwhelming. It was her yearlong focus on that all-too-difficult word balance that helped her refine her schedule. As you read Debbie’s and others’ stories, you will be inspired to find your own word and will see how one perfect word can make all the difference.

Words are everywhere. They describe us. They define us. God created the world with three of them, "Let there be_" Without words, how would we communicate with others? Debbie Macomber, in her book "One Perfect Word", shares how she began choosing one word to focus on throughout the year and the journey it has led her on. She discovered that when she decided to choose one word for the year that God took part in that choosing.

Using her journal, she shares her experiences over the past 20 years with the words she has chosen and shares her thoughts and prayers. She has been able to look back and see how that word was perfect for what she was going through and growing toward. She was also able to look back and see how only God could have chosen that word for her.

Over the past several years, I have read blogs by others who have done the same thing choosing words such as "intentional," "purpose," and "passion." Some have even chosen words like "organized" and "focus." The main ingredient to choose your word to focus on is prayer and listening to God's Words. "One Perfect Word" is an incredible reminder of our journey with God and a look into His wisdom and love for us. Not only has He chosen us to live in relationship with Him, He has also chosen our path.

Macomber shares her heart and opens up about the difficulties in her life and how one perfect word from the Father changed her life in ways she never thought possible even before she could realize it. Spending a year with one Word perfectly chosen will teach you about yourself and God Himself.

This book both inspired and encouraged me. It was very timely and most of the time while reading, I felt like Debbie was talking right to *me*. Her conversational tone in this book makes it very easy to read and I really enjoyed the personal examples she shared. She is very open in this book about some of her struggles, including her weight and her marriage. I appreciated her vulnerability and transparency very much, because reading how God brought her through those hard times ministered to me.

One Perfect Word is about Debbie's practice of choosing one word from the Bible to focus on and dissect for each year. This idea was born from the breakfast group that Debbie attended for over twenty years. These ladies each adopted this practice and this book is about the powerful impact that those *one* words have had on their lives.

Debbie shows readers how to quietly pray and "listen" for their perfect word, and how to go about choosing it. Debbie wrote that sometimes the word chooses us. Is there a word that keeps showing up over and over in your daily life? In articles - devotions - blogs? If so, that might just be your word for the year that God would have you focus on. Once you find your word, this book will take you through the steps of exploring it and discovering life lessons all stemming from *one* perfect word.

Debbie's words have changed over the years. Surrender, hope, prayer, trust.....these words and more transformed Debbie's life and as she looks back over her prayer journals, she can clearly see God at work. You may not know at first why you feel led to study a particular word but down the road, the purpose becomes clear.

I love this idea of choosing a word and even as I was thinking about adopting this practice for myself for 2012, my word jumped out at me. I had struggled with finding it as I was reading the book and begin to feel pressured as the time grew closer to 2012. I didn't want to start the new year and NOT have my word but I knew this couldn't be rushed. Sure enough, on the very first day of the year, my word jumped out at me while reading a bible verse and I knew in my heart, that was the word I was to cling to this year.

I highly recommend starting the year off with this book. Debbie makes it fun by offering not only spiritual applications, but very practical applications as well, such as projects you can do with your word.

Words are powerful. A word, the right word, can change a life.

Yet we are bombarded with thousands of words a day. Are words losing their impact? Do we need to go on a word diet?

What if you were to take one word, just one word, and meditate on it for the whole day, for the whole year?

"When we choose one single word from His Word and spend a year with it, I've found that the Lord takes us by the hand and walks us through the year, teaching us about that word, about ourselves, and even more, about God Himself." (11)

Macomber has two goals in this book. First, she wants to encourage us to begin the practice of focusing on one perfect word each year. She helps us find the word, how to explore it, and how to recognize the lessons from it.

Second, she shares fourteen of her own words. She explains what she has learned through stories. For example, she writes of desire, her desire to be a writer. It was five years before she sold her first piece of writing, a magazine article. Another example is the word balance. Her concentrating on that word included determining her priorities, and setting smart goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Rewarding, Time-bound). Pray, organize, and de-clutter, she learned.

She encourages us to get a notebook and begin to gather the words that appear over and over again in our life.

She also points out that the word she picks for the year is in addition to her regular reading and study of God's Word.

Discussion questions at the back make this a good choice for reading groups.

This is an inspiring book. It is a joy to read. Not only was I inspired to choose my own word for the year, I also received a great deal of insight from her as she shared the lessons she learned from her own words.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher for the purpose of this review.

One Perfect Word by Debbie Macomber is a thought provoking book. What's in a word? What would you learn about God, yourself, and your chosen word if you picked a word and worked on it for a whole year? This is basically what the book is about. The author concentrates on the words that she has studied in the past such as desire, believe, hunger, trust, brokenness, prayer, obedience, seek, balance, wisdom, surrender, hope, passion, and purpose. The author gives some advice as to how you can pick your word. It is posed as a challenge to pick a word and work on it for a year.

The author talks about several different people in her book. Some of these people I have heard about and some I have never heard. Such as Richard Chichester , a thirteenth-century English saint who prayed: May I know Thee more clearly, Love Thee more dearly, Follow Thee more nearly. It sounds very much like a song in the past that was called "Day by Day". This is a person I had never heard. It's mentioned in the chapter about balance. Another true story mentioned which I have heard about is in the chapter of trust about the missionaries Jim Eliot, Nate Saint, Ed McCully, Peter Fleming, and Roger Youderian who gave their lives in dealing with the Auca Indians.

The author also talks about true stories. The one I enjoyed reading the most was called "Heaven-Sent Meatloaf". You will have to read this to see how it turns out. This particular story was under the chapter about prayer. It reminds me of a time when I was sick with the flu and just starting to feel better. I wanted some vegetable soup so I prayed that someone would bring me some. No sooner had I done that then a friend from my church brought some over for me.

This book has been a challenge for me. I was deciding between picking the word forgiveness, grace, mercy, and brokenness. I think the word for me this year is going to be forgiveness. I went to do Sudoku and there was a saying about forgiveness. I was reading God's Shelter from the Storm by Sheila Walsh and it mentioned about forgiveness in that book. That is one indication that the word is yours -you keep seeing it.

I would highly recommend this book. It was a quick read. Once I started this book, I couldn't put it down.
