In this hilariously humbling fable about modern church culture, Miller introduces Sam, a misguided minister who feels free to hit the golf course after reading Physician, Heal Thyself: How to Kiss Pastoral Care Goodbye Forever. Publisher's Description

In this hilariously humbling fable about modern church culture, master storyteller Calvin Miller introduces Sam, a misguided ministry professional who is free to hit the golf course more often after reading Physician, Heal Thyself: How to Kiss Pastoral Care Good-bye Forever. Clearly poking fun at the “professionalization” of doing the Lord’s work, Miller’s point is that no matter how complex church life becomes, staying involved in the lives of real people is still top priority.

Author Bio

Calvin Miller is a favorite author of longstanding acclaim best-known for his classic, The Singer, among other celebrated works on the life of Jesus. He is also professor of preaching at Beeson Divinity School, Samford University, in Birmingham, Alabama.

I use this book for my mentoring group with college and seminary students. It combines depth and humor to emphasize the importance of being a pastor/shepherd not a CEO.

Calvin Miller weaves together a poorly written story of a pastor who desires to grow his church for all the wrong reasons. The objective of the story is to bring into check the rampant growth of the mega-church movement, but all Miller manages to do is to lovingly create a straw man and then proceed to tear him apart with poorly reasoned and eclectic arguments. While Miller's intent; to draw the American Church out of it's egotistical self-serving ways; is admirable, his way of presenting it leaves much to be desired.
