The New Revised Standard Version is the "standard" translation used by mainline Protestant churches, Orthodox churches, and by many Catholics. The NRSV debuted in 1989 and is owned by the National Council of Churches, which is the leading force for ecumenical cooperation among Christians in the United States representing thirty–five denominations with forty–five million members in more than 100,000 churches across the country. They have chosen HarperCollins to be the exclusive licensor of the translation for the world (nonexclusively in the UK).
The New Revised Standard Version is recognized in scholarly circles as the most accurate translation into English of the original Hebrew and Greek texts. In the tradition of its predecessors, the King James Version and the Revised Standard Version, the NRSV was designed to be the "standard" version for English–speaking people across all denominations, which in many ways it has become. None of the new, more sectarian translations have approached its standards of elegance and accuracy.
This unique one–column setting allows people to read the Bible as work of literature. Each book is introduced with an original wood–cut. Overall, this special easy–to–read setting makes the Bible a wonderful reading experience. It also includes a concordance index to help people find key passages.
C.R.5 Stars Out Of 5September 1, 2010C.R.This NRSV Bible is great! The formatting of the text is much more comfortable than attempting to read the 2-column type. It is also very useful when attempting to identify poetry vs. flat prose. The cover is beautiful and it is bound in such a way as to be able to have it lie flat no matter if it is the first few pages or the pages in the middle. The few notes that it contains are unobtrusive and do not interrupt the text at all. This was the perfect Bible for me and was exactly what I was looking for.
MizzouDudeMissouriAge: 55-65Gender: male3 Stars Out Of 5November 27, 2009MizzouDudeMissouriAge: 55-65Gender: maleBeing a fan of the NRSV and now the singl column format I was excited when I learned of this edition. After receiving it in the mail it was both moving and disappointing at the same time. The format, font size and extra linotype enhancements are not to be found in any other Bible. Beautifully done. The disappointment (a big one) is the "bleedthrough" which is absolutely horrendous and unacceptable. This edition looks great but (as a seminary student)is not practical at all for long periods of reading or serious Bible study. I hope Harper corrects this problem. If they do they will have a beautiful and wonderfully made hit on their hands.
Bill3 Stars Out Of 5October 27, 2009BillBeware of "ghosting" in these NRSV Standards--the print "bleeds through" the back of the page. A real shame. The layout and design is gorgeous; but it's unusable for extended reading. But if you just want a Bible to carry to church and look up a couple verses, it's great. Sort of all show and no go.
