Not By Might, by Al Lacy, is book eight in the Angel of Mercy series. I have not read the other books in the series but was not hindered by this, as the story stood alone well. The story was centered around the Zechariah 4:6, repeated many times throughout the book.

This is a fantastic Christian western story, set in the old west and complete with all of the typical old west characters, such as marshals, sheriffs, and deputies with their guns and horses. It also includes, however, a hospital with doctors and nurses, something not typically found in western stories.

I found the characters charming, if not totally realistic. They were lovable and sincere, always looking out for each other and trying to overcome evil.

This book contains an abundance of scripture. We should all aspire to be as fluent in the Word of God as the characters in this book. Even so, at times they launched into a Bible story at awkward moments, such as after just meeting another character, something we probably would not do in real life.

All in all, I found this to be a charming story, one that all western-lovers will truly enjoy.

I just finished reading Al Lacy's NOT BY MIGHT. It's been quite a few years since i picked up an Al Lacy book, simply because they have lost my interest. The book was well written, using words to aptly describe vivid scenery. The characters are strong and believable, and catch the reader's attention. His book is a typical Lacy wild western complete with good guys , the Marshalls and bad guys, the outlaws. It is a historical, taking place in Colorado before the use of motorized vehicles. Those who enjoy good clean westerns like Zane Grey will enjoy this book.

I prefer books with lots of action - keep you on your toes at the edge of the seat type of action, and Al Lacy does not do that for me. I don't mind the scripture being mentioned, but this book repeated Zachariah 4 verse 6 many, many times "Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit saith the Lord". Again, i prefer the gospel story as well as the salvation story (or lack thereof) to be told by the lives of the characters in a more subtle way that Al Lacy's in your face. I could recommend this book to an armchair reader who likes westerns.

A Christian Western is the best way to describe this book. This is book number nine in the Angel of Mercy series by Al Lacy. I have not read the other books in the series but it stood alone and that did not cause me a problem. In it, Nurse Breanna Brockman takes care of patients and assists doctors in various situations as her husband, U.S. Marshall John Brockman; helps clear the Wild West of bandits and outlaws making it a safer place to live. As the story weaves between the two characters we are introduced to others whose lives are intermingled with theirs. It is a good clean story that includes murder, suspense, tragedy and love while being interspersed with a lot of scripture and talk about God and how He works in our lives.

Al Lacy's stories can be read by any age group as they are wholesome and clean. It is evident that he knows a lot about westerns and has all his terminology correct when it comes to horses and guns. He has good plots in his stories as well. However, I have trouble connecting with his characters and feeling them to be believable. I hesitate to say that there is too much scripture in the books because we can never get enough of God's Word but the placement of the scripture in the context of the stories is sometimes awkward and contrived. The characters get a little too preachy at times and that takes away form the storyline as well. While I appreciate the author's contribution to the Christian fiction market this book came across as a little flat.

I received this complimentary copy from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group through their Blogging for Books program. A positive review was not required and the opinions expressed here are my own.
