The content of the text lives up to the title - a fresh look at old stories. Bloom takes the reader into the world of the character without distortion of the Biblical text. Bloom refrains from taking license in inserting speculative information to embellish or enamor as many "fresh looks" type texts do.

The style of writing allows the reader to embrace great spiritual truths that are often overlooked in reading or even preaching from the Biblical text. One is left with some deep and impacting "pictures" that he or she can carry to gaze upon in the midst of the present-day grind of life.

The text teach hard lessons of sinners who need a Savior and God. Those hard lessons come from the "flesh" Bloom puts on the literary bones and the difficulties, joys, and hardships they face.

Additionally, the presentation of God and Jesus are not demeaned by sugary sweet idioms. Rather, the God of the Bible and Jesus are represented as both compassionate and Holy is every way, including any judgment that is incurred because of un-confessed and non-repentant sin.

This would be a wonderful text for a small group study. The thirty-five short stories avail themselves to a read-one-a-week approach culminating in group discussion.

The text would also lend itself to the study by young preachers developing a story type preaching technique. The discipline required to remain faithful to the Scripture while, at the same time telling the "story" of real people, is made evident in Bloom's evocative method.

Day to day reading or a read-through approach would be helpful. Either way, note taking and journaling alongside the reading would be beneficial.

All in all, the book is a great read and I, as pastor and academician, teacher and counselor would recommend it to anyone who desires a "Fresh Look At Old Stories".

This book is a gem. Familiar stories from the Old and New Testaments are given a new perspective. Jon Bloom has written an insightful and thought-provoking book. I would recommend it to a friend without hesitation.
