The biography of Harry Burleigh is one of the most well written and interesting bios that I have ever read. I would highly recommend the book! He had an interesting life and was able to surmount several obstacles yet still maintain his dignity and positive mental attitude. He seemed to be possessed of great humility despite his enormous talent. A story of a life well lived and music that will live on. It is so wonderful that Burleigh actually wrote the music and lyrics to the African American Spirituals that are foundational to the American music genre.
Warmly written. Gives a real human side to what slavery meant to many. I found it a bit confusing the way the author jumped from "the present" to the father and grandfather's stories, but it was a great approach to telling the story. Gained an understanding and appreciation for Dvorak and his music. Would have been nice to have had more details of Burley's later life.
