Author Bio

Kimberley Woodhouse is a wife, mother, writer, and musician approaching life with a positive outlook despite difficult circumstances. Her previous book, Welcome Home: Our Family’s Journey to Extreme Joy, chronicles her daughter’s extremely rare health issues and how the Woodhouses received an amazing gift through the ABC television program Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Kim and her husband have two children and live in Colorado.

Kayla Woodhouse is a teenage author whose life-altering medical condition (a nerve disorder that prevents the body from regulating its temperature or sensing pain) has not stopped her love for swimming. She is home schooled and has an adventure blog called Dragon Claws, Dog Paws, Swimming Laws.

Publisher's Weekly

The two authors are a mother and her teenage daughter, and they borrow from reality--Kayla, the teenager, has a rare nerve disorder that prevents her from regulating body temperature or sensing pain--in presenting the action-filled tale of a mother and daughter, Jenna and Andie Tikaani-Gray (with the same disorder), whose plane is sabotaged and crashes into Sultana, the formidable neighbor of Alaska's Mt. Denali. A seriously injured Jenna and Andie must decide whether to trust the other crash survivor, Cole Maddox, in a plan to survive, and Maddox doesn't seem especially trustworthy. The story has its fascinating bits-- Andie's unusual disorder, survival in the Alaskan wilderness, the native Alaskan background of the two women--as well as not very original plot elements: Maddox's weepy backstory, cartoonish villains, the sage hospital chaplain. The evangelical Christian formula of accepting-Jesus-as-your-savior helps drive the plot, which some will like and others won't. This has page-turning potential, but is too predictable and emotionally manipulative to earn a large audience. (Mar.) Copyright 2011 Reed Business Information.

Written by a mother and daughter team, No Safe Haven, is a journey into the dangerous and beautiful wilderness of Alaska. Jenna is the mother of a young girl named Andie who has a rare medical disorder that can put her very life in danger in the blink of an eye. What may startle some readers is that Kayla, one of the co-authors, does have the disorder the character Andie has in the tale where they cannot feel pain or regulate their body temperatures.

The action starts from the first words on the page and only increases until the very end of the book! Jennas husband Marcus is killed. He had been in the Army, but lately his actions were leaving Jenna with an unquiet spirit. Andie just had a major operation when her father was killed. Now, a year later, Jenna and Andie are flying into Alaska ready to start the lives anew. However, the plane has been badly sabotaged which leads to one scary ending by crashing into the side of a mountain. When Andie wakes up first, she begins to check her mom and minimize the effects of the severe cold temperatures and the coming snow storm.

Those who are after Marcus computer program mean business and arent afraid to remove anyone who attempts to keep them from locating their prize. Not only is the writing exceptional, but so is the input of the disorder from which Kayla Woodhouse suffers. Knowing some of what real people with this rare disorder go through along with their loved ones was an eye opening experience. I loved how Andies faith was bold, open, and unafraid, and her dependence on God amazing. The mother-daughter bond depicted throughout the novel is heart-touching. I loved how the authors show that the love of God shown before others can melt even the hardest of hearts. The one character named Cole really was resistant to hearing about God for a long time in the novel. When you read the book, see what cracks the hard veneer of this Army man. Another book the mother and daughter have collaborated on is Race Against Time and I plan on reading this soon!

Here is another wonderful novel to wrap and give to your avid reader this coming holiday season!

No Safe Haven is one of those books that grabs you and pulls you into the story from the very first page, which is great and very exciting. There is so much suspense in not only the precarious situations in which the characters land, but also in the dilemma of who can be trusted, which changes throughout the story. These dangers are all compounded by the medical condition of the young character, Andie.

Most of the story moves along at a fast pace. Each very short chapter is told from the viewpoint of one of the characters, so the reader is privy to the mind and emotions of many characters throughout the novel. I found this aspect of the novel to be very interesting. I think the authors did a good job in connecting the reader to each of the different characters. My favorite character is Andie, who is a preteen. She is feisty and definitely an overcomer. I think she is a great addition to the cast of characters.

Andie and Jenna are both committed Christians, who rely heavily on God for guidance and protection. This spiritual aspect plays a large part in the story.

If you enjoy adventure and suspense with a bit of romance thrown in, I think you will like No Safe Haven.

Andie and her mother, Jenna, are flying home from a doctor's appointment in Anchorage when the pilot sabotages their small plane. They crash on Sultana, a mountain that is part of the Denali National Park. Stranded with a winter storm on its way, only one man can keep them alive, the mysterious last-minute passenger, Cole. With hidden secrets and killers trying to track them down, no one really trusts anyone. Yet they must trust each other if they are going to survive.

This was an engaging story told from several points of view, including that of Andie, Jenna's teenage daughter. Andie's point of view was written by Kayla Woodhouse, a teenage author and daughter of Kimberly. What a fun thing to write a book with a family member like that. They did an excellent job. I thoroughly enjoyed the suspense as Jenna, Andie, and Cole fought to stay alive despite the way the bad guys and nature kept coming at them. And there is an interesting mystery woven into this tale as well. Very well done. Can't wait to read book two!

This debut novel by a mother-daughter writing team has all the elements of a riveting story: challenging setting, exciting plot, personable characters, suspense, and romance. Jenna Tikaani-Gray, a native Alaskan, and her 12-year-old daughter, Andie, are flying home from Anchorage to North Pole, Alaska, when their plane mysteriously crashes. Why were their pilot and their last-minute passenger fighting? Whom can they trust? Is someone actually trying to kill them?

Kimberley and Kayla Woodhouse have pooled their creative writing talents to pen a winning thriller in No Safe Haven, with protagonists similar to them. Kayla lives with the same rare medical disorder as Andie so her insights led credibility. At times Andie sounds quite adultlike, but dealing with such a condition would mature a person. She also steals readers' hearts with her sincere reality, her humor, and her vulnerability. She's so real.

I couldn't read fast enough, yet I didn't want their story to end. I'm glad it's the first of a series. I look for more engaging tales from this dynamic duo.

Interesting and suspenseful enough to keep you reading. I did figure out where the plot was leading and figured the outcome.

However, I still enjoyed the book. It gives insight to a rare disease and how difficult coping with something noone understands can be.
