WestchesterHSAge: 35-44Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Pretty Basic AlgebraJuly 27, 2015WestchesterHSAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 3Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4I picked up this book at my local library along with two others, "Algebra Success in 20 Minutes a Day" and "Easy Algebra Step-by-Step". We had been using BJU Algebra 1 and Algebra 2. My teens hated it and I wasn't fond of it either. There were never enough example or instructions for each lesson. I'm not terrible at math but there were many of times I was baffled by the instructions.
I took the topics from BJU and compared it to all three books. "No Nonsense Algebra" was the closest in covering the topics for Algebra 1. They all had a few Algebra 2 too.
So far I really like this book and the access to the instructional videos. The lessons are short. Instructions straight forward and examples and hints. I plan to use all three books combined to help in areas lacking, if any, or for just additional practice. Since it's a library book I don't feel tethered to it if we come across any difficulty. And again the other two books are additional resources, too! Better than paying $150 for a program that's full of fluff and not enough instructions for parents or child.
lahso2011Age: 45-54Gender: female1 Stars Out Of 5Terrible instructionJuly 14, 2012lahso2011Age: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 1Value: 1Meets Expectations: 1This book provides TERRIBLE instruction. The attractiveness of it was the "no fluff" approach. Unfortunately, the lessons were TOO quick, and there was never any explanation of real-world application for the concepts. Frequently the lessons would provide examples that correlated to the first few practice problems, but then by the latter half of each practice set, there would be no correlating examples or explanations and we were stuck. While answers are provided, there are no solution steps available to show how the answers are arrived at. As a parent who is not good at Algebra, this was awful. I emailed Rick Fisher personally and his response was, "you don't need solution steps; you just must not be watching the lesson enough. Go and watch it again and you will get it." That didn't happen.
The results were constant stress, we ended up switching curriculum mid-stream, we were still working on algebra well into July, and when my son took a placement test to get into a Geometry class at our co-op, he FAILED all of the algebra portions.
At best this book might provide a little review and practice problems for a student who is using a REAL textbook to learn algebra.
tortalizOrlando, FloridaAge: 35-44Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5My daughter is finally doing her mathApril 18, 2012tortalizOrlando, FloridaAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5After much struggling this year and using another product for Math. I was at the end of my rope when I happened to come across" No Nonsense Algebra" I did some research and decided to give it a try. The price had some bearing on my decision because I didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars and end up still struggling and frustrated. I have to say I am very happy with "No Nonsense Algebra" I no longer hear, This is stupid, why do i have to do this and the ever popular I will never use this.... The video Tutorial for every lesson is exactly what we needed. He teaches it in a way that is "No Nonsense"! I recommend this product to anyone who is is doing Algebra.
