I applaud Nelson for bringing back the Open Bible. I have always liked the Biblical Cyclopedic Index. It is the first Bible I bought when I was saved back in the early eighties and therefor have become very attached to it. When I saw that it was in print again I mentioned it to my wife and I think she was as quick as I to buy it. That said I cannot express with words how disappointed I was when I received it. Yes it has all the features I fell in love with so many years ago, but when I pulled it out of the box the sight and feel of the cover just threw cold water all over my excitement. Apparently "Bonded Leather" isn't what it use to be. It feels as cheap as any cover I have ever felt. The front cover wont lay down like all other Bible covers I have, it stays rounded up and open. I know I have been spoiled with some Calf skin Bibles but surely they could have put a little nicer cover on it. I would have been more than willing to spend a little extra money fore it. Okay, a lot of extra.
EXCELLENT STUDY BOOK AND COMPANION TO OTHER STUDY BIBLES
March 4, 2015
This bible is fantastic! I highly recommend this "tool" that helps one dig deeper into The Word of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. I read and study the bible daily. I regularly use my KJV, NIV and NASB, simultaneously. Sometimes I'll even compare and reference with either my 1599 or 1560 Geneva (minus the study "notes" of those Genevas). I started reading the "Open Bible" and it is a treasure trove of inspiration, that leads one to a fuller understanding of God's word. I recommend a good basic study bible like the one from Zondervan in either NIV (preferably pre 2011 edition) or NASB. In addition to the above, I also recommend having at the table and side-by-side, the "Key word Greek-Hebrew" study bible, a "Thompson Chain Reference" study bible and this "Open" bible. All three point out unique perspectives and helps, without distorting the inspired words of God.
Personally, I use at the study table and regularly at the same time the following resources:
-KJV study bible (Zondervan)
-Thompson Chain reference (NIV)
-Key Word Hebrew-Greek study bible (NASB)
and finally this latest edition...
-The Open bible (NKJV).
These four core bible translations with their respective and independent "helps" has really allowed me to understand some difficult, yet beautiful books of the Christian bible. God makes all these resources possible for us!
I was really excited to get this bible for my husband because I have The Open Bible Expanded Version (Study Bible) and absolutely love it! The print was clear, dark and a highly readable font, the verses set off to the left with a new verse beginning a new sentence etc. So imagine my surprise when we got the bible and the print was incredibly small and very very light (It is about 2 points smaller than my bible and significantly lighter ink). When we sat the bible on our laps (as we would in church) it was so light, it was not readable. Not sure if this was a defect or not, but in any case, it was simply too light to read easily , even in good light and close up. In addition, the verses were mixed in the paragraph, not set off at the left edge of the column and marking a new paragraph/sentence. This made finding a verse extremely difficult, especially finding one quickly as occurs during church service. Of course the contents were excellent for studying and learning the bible and I appreciated the updated information. The thumb index was improved from my version, also. We returned it for a refund. I see other reviews on here about the smaller print also. Sometimes, you just need to stick with what works. I don't think it is as good a version as my Open Bible expanded version from the late 80s early 90s. And for those skeptics that think we are old and it is our eyesight, not the case! :)
This Bible is fantastic and has so much information for study I have not found in any other Bible. I had one from the 70's in the KJV, but the NKJV is easier for me to understand. I would definitely recommend it for a study bible. Also remember that it went out of print and they had to many requests that it is back in print. Just wish the print was larger. Great Bible!
