This review was written for NIV Study Bible, Top Grain Leather, Black.
This version of the NIV,2011, is a good version of the NIV with it new changes from the last update. The leather on the Bible is good, not the highest quality but what is expected at this price point. What I did not like is that after having the Bible for a couple of weeks I turned to a certain page to find that a good part of the top corner was torn off and missing all together from the book. There should have been better construction and care in the making of the book. I should have returned it, but time gets a way from you and can only do so much at a time.

I can say that the study notes in this version are good and there are good cross references and a concordance in the back of the Bible.

Plenty of people have reviewed the content of the study Bible so I have nothing to add in that regard except to reiterate previous reviews that in those cases where "men" has been changed to "people" it has nothing to do with political correctness. Rather it is an attempt to clarify for the reader when the author of a book is referring to humankind in general or males specifically. I'll review the cosmetics of the NIV Study Bible, Top Grain Leather, Black, Indexed Bible. Some complained about the top-grain leather. If you're looking for a buttery feel and the smell of leather, you probably want cowhide and not top-grain leather. That said, I disagree with previous reviews that the Bible feels cheap, fake, or too stiff. Though not as supple as cowhide, it is more flexible than bonded leather. I have no problems with this Bible lying flat or staying closed. Regarding size, it's a study Bible so it is going to be big but it's a standard size and fits my size large Bible cover perfectly. If you're looking for something slim you might want to purchase a bible that's not a study Bible specifically for that purpose. The paper and printing are of high quality and I personally don't have any problems with the font size or color. You could purchase a large print edition but that is a bigger Bible and in my opinion too large to carry around. I ordered the large print initially but exchanged it due to its size. Those that complained of irregular printing or ink spots and smudges may have inadvertently ordered or been shipped a factory second, which are available from Christian Book. I think it's a beautiful Bible, I love the color throughout and couldn't be happier with my purchase.

The NIV is always solid. The NIV Study Bible is good to have. BUT. Why can't Zondervan (and other publishers) learn that printing "red-letter-editions" is, frankly, silly? It is just fine to "color-ize" Jesus' words, but why RED? Red ink is not eye-friendly, for anyone. Tradition, smadition. My eyesight is still terrific, but those of us in older middle age don't need more challenges. AND THINK ABOUT IT: If you print Large Print editions to HELP people read more easily, why make it more DIFFICULT by printing in RED? Color is fine - but pick a different color. How about "ROYAL purple"?
