NRSVfanIthaca, New YorkAge: 45-54Gender: Male4 Stars Out Of 5Excellent Update, but Glued BindingAugust 22, 2014NRSVfanIthaca, New YorkAge: 45-54Gender: MaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4Pew Bibles are usually lauded as being durable, no-nonsense, workhorses. With their classic hardcovers, pages discolored by long years, and pure utility format, I've always had an affinity for pew Bibles. Unfortunately, all too many Bible publishers opt for glued bindings in what are otherwise excellent pew Bibles. And this 2011 NIV pew Bible is no exception. It's really a nice, no-nonsense pew Bible that reflects a format of pure utility wrapped around the latest evangelical scholarship. Despite the criticism of gender neutral pronouns (but seriously, in a functionally-equivalent Bible version, why would there not be gender neutral pronouns???), there's really a lot to like in the 2011 over the 1984. Countless little updates in details, reflecting the latest scholarship, make the 2011 far superior to the 1984 (think "expanse" in the 1984's Genesis 1 versus "vault" in the 2011's). So, why hold such an otherwise excellent Bible together with... glue? My less than "5" ratings for this Bible all come down to the fact that this pew Bible does not have a sewn binding. Put some threads in this baby, and it'd be all 5s in my pews!
