The Bible is beautiful, the leathersoft allows it to sit comfortably in my lap. It is more readable than some other chronological versions: it looks like a story. The comments and explanations are interesting - I might worry that a new believer may find them faith-rattling at times - but on the other hand it is important to accept the reality that scripture exists alongside other similar contemporary stories and practices, with important differences. There have been a few times when I prefer the way other versions said something, like in Micah "I hate divorce" has been muted. Not being a scholar, I accept that there are different ways to understand difficult passages in original languages. Most importantly, this layout is helping me want to read larger portions of scripture. This is incredibly important in our day of sound bites. There is something you get about the scope of God's story, when you read a whole book at a time, that does not come with a Bible study that focuses on several verses or a chapter. Context, overall purpose, continuity of scripture over time and out of various people's viewpoints...it is an astonishing book, friends! God's word is still what this world needs, what I need. Thank you for this readable version. Practically, I do wish the paper was a little more hardy, but appreciate the helps at front and back of the book. The pictures, I feel ambivalent about. Not sure I believe the quality artistically is top notch, they seem sometimes to be Sunday School art from long time ago, but it is nice to have the text broken up with color. It cements the story with a visual image. Overall, I am very pleased.
what an excellent & creative way to read the Bible in its entirety! this is a great tool & resource to use on top of your daily Bible reading. its filled with maps & personal profiles as well as life application commentary that's relevant & understandable! there's so much packed in the pages, it's hard to turn them because i didn't wanna miss anything!
I had always wanted to have a chronological Bible; therefore, I was quite excited when I got an opportunity to review this particular Bible. The Chronological Study Bible (NIV) presents the text of the Bible arranged in chronological order as the events actually took place. It includes Daily Life Notes (with various topics such as Marriage & Family, Politics & Government, Science & Technology, Trade & Economics, Plants & Animals, Health & Medicine, Arts & Literature, and more), Background Notes, transition commentaries, historical overviews, Time Panels, Time Charts, Time Capsules, and color maps that help readers understand life, culture, history, events, and locations in Bible times. I love the colorful illustrations and photos of places, people, and artifacts. This Bible is divided into 9 epochs. Each one starts with an introduction. At the end of the Bible, you'll find an index of Cultural and Historical Topics, glossary, concordance, an index of Scriptural passages, and daily reading plans. This beautiful Bible is an excellent resource for anyone who loves to study the Bible, enjoys history, and wants to explore God's Word in chronological order. Bonuses: This Bible is guaranteed for life (you can register online for your lifetime guarantee) and it provides the link to a free Bible Study Tools download. The only thing that I don't like about this Bible is that it uses the gender-neutral approach which is politically correct but not Biblically correct. I'm really disappointed about that!
~I received a free copy of this book free from the publisher through the BookLook Bloggers. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
The NIV Chronological Study Bible: Explore God's Word In Order, published by Thomas Nelson, is a unique Study Bible that offers its readers a new perspective on the events and circumstances of The Bible.
My reaction to receiving a new Bible can only be compared to an adolescent that has been given free range of a toy store. To say I was excited about the opportunity to receive and review the NIV Chronological Study Bible would be a drastic understatement, for I am grateful to say the least.
While I own numerous Bibles, published in a multitude of versions, there is always room for one more if it has the ability to guide my study of scripture in a unique manner, if it has the ability to enhance my walk with Christ, The NIV Chronological Study Bible certainly has this ability.
What makes this Bible unique is the manner in which it is laid out. The passages of scripture, as well as individual events, are arranged in chronological order, the order that correlates to the time of the events narrated in each book or passage allowing the reader to experience all the events of the Bible in their sequential order no matter the passage or book in which they were recorded.
Transition commentaries aid the reader in the understanding of the placement and chronology of the related passages and how they relate to the ancient history. These commentaries help guide the student through the history and culture of the Bible.
There are many other wonderful aspects to this Bible, such as Time Capsules, Time Panels, Background Notes, Historical Overviews, etc. all of which contribute to the intensity and power of this Bible, but are to numerous to go into detail in this review.
While I would not recommend this Bible to become your everyday go to Bible, I do recommend its purchase, as it has the power to greatly bless your time of study.
