Editorial Reviews

VALOR, ACTION, ROMANCE, HEART... Nightshade is the perfect blend of everything I like best in a story. I can’t recommend it enough!

Nightshade kept me up all night!  A tight plot, heartthrob heroes, and description so rich I could hear the jungle noise, feel the heat slide down my back. I’ll be clearing out a shelf to make room for Ronie’s books!

Nightshade is the first book I have read for a review.  I am a fan of love stories and the military and this one did not disappoint.  Ronie Kendig really captured my heart with the military members and kept the story full of action and romance!  I always enjoy a book that has someone comes to Christ and learns to trust God, as it is such a victory for them!  I was constantly waiting to see what was going to happen next and really struggled to put the book down.  Following many characters at the same time can sometimes cause the reader to be confused, however Kendig did a good job separating the story lines, then merging them together.  She had great descriptions of the locations, pain, love, and fear that the characters were going through.  I even squirmed when the viper dropped down!  I was thankful for the Characters/Glossary and the Glossary of Terms, especially since the Nightshade team went by nicknames.

Ronie Kendig has outdone her debute release, Dead Reckoning with Nightshade. This intense story full of action, is also full of emotion and life. Men dealing with issues they hadn’t planned on. Surprise after surprise and bomb after bomb set this adventurous trail with the reader racing to the end.  I found myself crying and smiling and hated it when it ended. But, I have it on good authority that that there are more Discarded Heroes stories coming.  Ronie, I can’t wait!

Kendig doesn't have to worry about a sophomore slump. Heart-pounding action, intrigue and handsome, fearless heroes combine as readers crisscross the globe following the exciting missions of the Nightshade team.

Ronie Kendig delves into the hearts, minds, and souls of the characters to give the reader an exciting, emotional, evocative look at the resiliency of people and their capacity to love.

Nightshade is timely in its depiction of the atrocities present in our world today, yet it is timeless in its revelation of love and faith that never gives up.  Tough fighters, true heroes that love without reservation and have deep abiding faith—men that show “Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for a friend” makes Nightshade memorable.

It was an enjoyable, emotional read from start to finish. Ms.Kendig drew characters I could relate to, people I wanted to get to know better. I cried several times, identified with their emotions throughout and did not want to stop reading. I was hard pressed to stop for anything, even when my eyes got so tired that the words blurred on the screen.

Nightshade is a fast paced military thriller. There were many complexities in this story that required solid plotting, and that was very well done. The author clearly understands the way men think and did a great job showing that. Same with the strained marriage relationship and the ex-military type teamwork. The Nightshade team acted like they were ex-special ops, which made the story that much more intriguing.

The characters in this book were extraordinary.  I immediately sympathized with Max. Reckless abandonment combined with internalized hurts where highly effective in creating a character the reader could love.  It was a little harder to sympathize with Sydney though.  Her actions were understandable and there’s no excusing Max’s behavior, but her decisions, especially late in the story made her more frustrating to follow.  Other members of the Nightshade team were wonderfully intriguing and presumably subsequent books will fill in some of their backgrounds.

Wow, wow, wow! This is one fascinating read and I recommend it to EVERYONE!

Nightshade was not only excellent read for me but my husband intends to pick up the book and read it now too.  With the suspense and military action (along with questions I had for him), this book appeals to far more than just women.

While this book was a great, fast moving read, the last 1/4 of the book was very unrealistic. The character was not developed to be someone who would put her unborn child at risk like she did. Also, for Holden to all of a sudden have an interest in her just didn't work. I did very much feel like it stayed on track with Max finding God and I absolutely loved the other characters of the Nightshade team. All that said, I did enjoy the book and am going to purchase the next one in the series in hopes that the writing gets better.

Oh my goodness, what a ride!! Max Jacobs is the elite when it comes to his job, but he believes himself to be a failure in his personal life and he doesn't want help from anyone. "I'm good," is what he tells everyone until he figures out his next step. He's impulsive, full throttle, determined, loyal, and loves to ride his motorcycle. He doesn't do things halfway and even though he once believed in God, he now thinks that God gave up on him and with good reason. Max is the kind of character you gotta love, he's a fierce soldier with great instincts. As the story begins, we discover that his wife has filed for separation which then leads to divorce. Max is devastated and enraged, has lost his purpose, and he has no idea what to do next. Then he gets an opportunity to join a Special Ops team dubbed Nightshade, will this new venture lead to disaster or victory?

Sydney is still inlove with Max, but can no longer abide his temper and brokenness. He refuses to get help and then accidentally hits Sydney in the face. Her older brother advises on filing separation for Sydney's safety and she follows along not knowing what else to do. Then Sydney gets a surprise and a chance to cover a real story at work, The Virginia Independent, little does she know that this research connects with Max. The closer she gets to answers, the more she endangers herself and those around her. Will finding out the truth be worth the consequences she endures?

When I first started blogging I heard about Nightshade and knew I had to get a copy. I'm the kind of reader that doesn't like to start a book without having the entire series already on my bookshelves. It took about a year and a half to get this series, but it was absolutely worth the wait! I considered Max to be a brilliant and confident soldier, a definite hero with heart who constantly makes sacrifices for his team and Sydney, but he was an idiot and nonsensical when it came to his wife. With the help of his team and the missionaries he ends up rescuing, he finally gains the clarity and perspective he missed throughout the story.

I absolutely loved the scenes with Nightshade!! They work hard, but they also play hard together. These are six men of different backgrounds and skills who have been recruited by General Lambert. They become brothers and depend on one another both on missions and in their personal lives. Max is the hothead of the group and he ends up in a fight or two with them, but they're still getting to know one another as the story progresses. Max is also amazed by their loyalty and in disbelief at one point in how they back him up so the job can be done properly. I have much more respect and admiration for the military after reading this story, but I was also able to identify specific needs of why soldiers need prayer. It's not just for their safety while on active duty, it's also for their personal lives for those who come home and need help adjusting to civilian life. The creed stated at the beginning of the book is referred to throughout the story, these men hold this creed very seriously and draw strength as well as motivation from it when times are tough. The Bible is also mentioned in the story and Max is introduced to it.

There is NO profanity in Nightshade (another reason to love it), but there is plenty of violence. There's only one graphic scene in the story, which is briefly described in a nightmare Max has from the trauma he has experienced. Otherwise, I didn't think anything horrific occurs. The violence is tastefully depicted and realistic to the story, but it is INTENSE at some parts of the book. I laughed at certain parts, I cried tremendously at others. The suspense of the story really grabs at the reader and I almost felt like reading with one eye instead of two because of what would happen next, but I HAD TO KNOW. More than once I felt like yelling, "Run!!" or "Get out of there!!" The deaths of characters in the story are tangible, the danger and unknown elements keep you turning pages as fast as possible, the faith in the story is amazing, and the writing is so utterly captivating that you feel like you're there with Nightshade! I didn't really notice much romance in the book, although the missionary couple is obviously inlove and depend on one another for survival. Max and Sydney aren't together for much of the story so the main romance for me was how Max does everything in his strength to keep Sydney safe. Nightshade also jumps in to rescue her or help Max protect her, I thought that was awesome.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves adventure, action, suspense, a mission gone terribly wrong and the military heroes it comes with. I consider this book a must have for any booklover, but this story is not for the faint of heart. It can be read as a standalone, but I suggest reading the entire series because more questions need to be answered and you get to love these characters. I'm truly looking forward to Digitalis next!

I loved Nightshade. An action packed, romantic thriller based on a black ops team. Think Alias meets the Navy SEALs. Wholesome and Christian in morals, yet realistic about the problems in this world: terrorists, war, hostages, missionaries in hostile countries, etc. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to hear about the challenges the military & special forces face in keeping our country safe.

Author/Artist Review

Author: Ronie Kendig

Tell us a little about yourself.  In 2010, I will celebrate my 20th wedding anniversary. With my husband, we have four children and two dogs. I have a BS in Psychology and grew up an Army brat.

What was your motivation behind this project?  I've always loved writing military or action-adventure stories. But one Sunday during church, a woman requested prayer. Her husband was a Navy SEAL and his anger and PTSD were destroying their marriage. It was a moment of stunning clarity for me--I knew it would be a grave injustice to ever pen a story that romanticized our heroes. Don't get me wrong--they *are* heroes, but they're also people with hurts/needs, and I think that is often forgotten.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  I hope readers will come to the series with an open mind, that they'd find hope & healing, and perhaps a desire to support our men & women in the armed forces with more compassion, more prayer, and more understanding. Above all, I pray that the wounded of heart and/or soul will find hope in God.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  Writing this story took a huge emotional toll, as has its sequel, which I'm working on now. The research alone was heart-breaking, but delving so deep into a character with such intensity drained me. I had to prep myself every time through prayer and mental focus to really jump in and get the story written.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  I love to hear from readers, and they can visit me online at my website or on my Facebook fan site. The Discarded Heroes series includes: Nightshade, Digitalis, Wolfsbane, and Firethorn. I also have an espionage thriller, Dead Reckoning, through Abingdon Press!
