ChristianBookPreviews

The final installment of Bryan Davis’ epic Echoes from the Edge series is here! In Nightmare’s Edge, Nathan Shepherd travels through dream dimensions to find his father and Kelly Clark and, hopefully, stop the three dimensions from colliding. He must also avoid the stalker Mictar, discern the purpose of a mysterious girl called Felicity in the dream world, keep himself from becoming a dream, decide who his friends and enemies are, and figure out his own limitations. Every decision he makes affects the future of mankind, and for Nathan and all of mankind time is running out.

While God is not often overtly mentioned in Nightmare’s Edge, He is clearly the center of the characters’ worlds. The plot is a captivating one, whether the reader has read its predecessors or not. The story is a unique blend of God, music, technology, and action, which are expertly combined into a masterpiece the reader will find engrossing.

The characters themselves are well developed, and each goes through growth as the story progresses. There is a character who often references popular movies, which comes across as slightly unprofessional and throws off the mood, though it might have been an attempt to make the story more realistic by relating it to pieces of culture the reader will recognize. However, as the reader gets used to this and begins to accept it as part of the character, it becomes less disruptive. The characters in general are realistic, and incur the proper responses from the reader. The characters the reader should love are lovable, whereas the characters the reader should loathe and fear fulfill expectations as well. There are a few characters on whom it is hard to form an opinion until the end, and that is also how it should be.

The writing itself is not always neat and clear, but the concepts themselves are so captivating that the occasional weak writing is not a hindrance to enjoying the overall story. I would especially recommend this book for Christian teenagers looking for a clean but intense fantasy book. – Rebekah R. Blomenberg, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com

Book three in the Echoes from the Edge series begins with Nathan and Cerulean exploring the dream world in search for Jack and Ceruleans supplicant. But the dream world is a dangerous place for a human. Nathan finds Kelly there and is compelled to answer her pleas for help, despite Ceruleans insistence that she is not the real Kelly. This sets the story into a non-stop adventure with our heroes moving back and forth between Red Earth, Blue Earth, Yellow Earth, the world between worlds, and the dream world. They have very little time to find Nathans father, find the real Kelly who got lost in the dream world, find Ceruleans supplicant, and play the giant violin again before the three worlds are forever destroyed. Can Nathan do all this and remove the stone of judgment from his heart and truly love?Wow. I have now read all three Echoes from the Edge books and my brain is still a bit sore. While they left me fully entertained in awe and wonder, I still dont grasp how everything in this multi-dimensional fantasy world works. Were Patar and the supplicants angels and the others demons? Maybe they were beings of Davis own creation? Still, the imagery Davis created was beautiful and haunting. His characters each needed to face their own fears and trust that God would take care of them. This was the message I most enjoyed. That true love is more that a physical, emotional feeling. True love is sacrifice and forgiveness. They joy this kind of love brings to a life is music indeed. Recommended.

In complete honesty, I liked the other books in this trilogy better, but I still enjoyed this one overall. On the low points, I felt this one dragged a bit, until the last one hundred pages or so, which seemed to absolute fly by. the other point was that I felt confused through parts of the book trying to remember features and events that had happened to the characters previously in the other two books.Overall, the series is an incredible use of imagination and imagery. It takes you into a realm of reality that is different from anything a reader has experienced before, and then through out in bits and pieces, the reader is offered a deeper meaning to the entire story. It is creative and leaves one open to ask the right kinds of questions to learn about the ultimate adventure.I definitely suggest reading the series in order. If you attempt to just read this book, you will be quite lost.
