ChristianBookPreviews.comThe second of four books in Terri Blackstocks Restoration series, Night Light is an incredibly interesting book with a unique, captivating storyline. In time of worldwide devastation, the Branning family learns to depend on God more than ever. This book chronicles their struggles, as a family and as individuals, to survive.
In the previous book in the Restoration series, Last Light, a worldwide black-out had hampered all of mankind. All forms of electronic power have been lost. Everyone was forced to live in a world technologically set back hundreds of years. Doug Branning, who was an accountant before the blackout, was then forced into the roles of pastor, well digger, farmer, and community leader. He and his family struggled, like the rest of the world, to survive. His troubles increased when his oldest daughter, Deni, ran away to be with her fiancé and ended up in the clutches of a psychopathic killer. Only through Gods mercy was her life spared. Now the sequel, Night Light, continues the saga of the worldwide outage. The Brannings are presented with a difficult situation. They are learning to adjust to the outages but are still just barely making it. Things get even worse after their house is broken into and vital supplies are stolen. When the Brannings discover who the thieves are, they are filled with mixed emotions. Two young boys, Aaron and Joey, were just trying to feed themselves and their younger brother and sister. On the one hand, the Brannings are upset because their home was broken into, but on the other hand they are filled with Christian compassion for these children. The children have no one to care for them because their mother vanished shortly after the outages, and they do not know who their fathers are. Despite what others in the community say, the Brannings make the decision to take in these children. Doing this paves the path for a quite interesting storyline. As a subplot, Deni struggles in her relationship with her fiancé. With Craig so far away, communication so slow, and letters so seemingly cold, their relationship suffers. The outages prove to be a wake-up call to Deni in her relationship with God. Craig is an unbeliever, which puts an even heavier strain on the relationship. What happened to the childrens mother? How will the Brannings survive with four extra mouths to feed? Will Deni and Craig still marry? This book answers all these questions in a storyline full of suspense and unexpected twists. I love books that demand my attention, and Terri Blackstocks Night Light did just that. I could not put it down. With a very well conceived plot, this book grabs the attention of the reader and does not let go. The ending is great; it concludes the story but still leaves room for the imagination to wonder what will happen in the next book in the series. I would recommend this book to any one who enjoys Christian suspense. Rachel A.
