Product Description

This masterly presentation of New Testament Theology takes the unique step of setting up an imaginary debate amongst the various authors of the New Testament themselves. As central concepts (predestination, sin, atonement, the Church, sacrament, ethics, escathology, and christology) are "discussed" between such figures as Luke, Paul, John, and the author of Hebrews, the work moves to a climax with the presentation of the theology of Jesus himself. The result is a full discussion of the ideas which lie at the very heart of Christianity, deserving a place on the shelf of every serious pastor, theologian, and student of the Bible.

Publisher's Description

This is a new and masterly presentation of New Testament theology by one of the leading religious scholars of this century. It takes the unique step of setting up an imaginary dialogue on the central concepts of the Christian faith between the various authors of the New Testament themselves, thus capturing in a particularly fresh and lucid way the differing approaches and attempts of these first Christians to explore and elucidate their faith.

Editorial Reviews

"An outstanding contribution to the field of NT theology that builds upon the insights of Caird's contemporaries in the field, while adding his own unique insights on the central themes usually associated with this field of study....The book is extremely well done and recommended for anyone interested in scholarly study of NT theology. It is especially recommended for college and seminary libraries, but it is written in such a way as to be accessible to the general reader as well."--Choice

Simply put, this is New Testament scholarship at its best. Lincoln Hurst, the very able student of the late George Caird at Oxford, has done a tremendous job compiling and completing Caird's major unfinished work in NT theology. Anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the theology of the New Testament texts will not be disappointed with what is certainly one of the best works available today on the subject. By using an approach which he calls an "Apostolic Conference," Caird allows each of the New Testament writers to speak individually on a host of important subjects such as the Kingdom of God, Salvation and Christology. The genius behind such an approach is that it avoids a stilted presentation of NT theology which can often favor one of the New Testament writers, usually Paul, at the expense of the other important canonical voices. What results is a thoroughly fresh and compelling view of New Testament theology that encompasses the brilliantly unique and rich witnesses of all the New Testament writers. Although this edition looks to be out-of-print, let us hope that a new version is close on its heels. You will not find a more well-rounded, insightful and accessible treatment of NT theology than this.
