This reference book is a compact commentary on the entire Bible that readers can use to familiarize themselves with the methods and paths followed by biblical scholars. It features current theories on dating, historical reconstruction, and archaeological information. Contemporary perspectives and topical articles of an introductory nature include Hermeneutics, Canonicity, Old Testament themes, and coverage of biblical theology. Additional commentary includes articles on Jesus, the early Church, Gnosticism, and the subapostolic church. Especially for seminarians and clergy who require a commentary on the Scriptures both during their formal study of theology and for preaching in their ministry. Also, for those interested in religion and theology on all levels and feel the need for an adequate background in the Bible.

On the one hand, you have a wide range of text covered and sometimes it's nice to just read some basic, introductory thoughts on a passage or to have some main ideas distilled. But on the other hand, because so little is written, it's not going to be that deep and you're going to need to use other sources anyway.
If you are just starting out and attempting to build up a library, acquiring a one-volume commentary is probably a useful step. Like a good study Bible they will include a helpful introduction to each book, as well as informative articles and charts and maps - this commentary has all of those items. It is quite expensive for a one-volume commentary and there are other works with similar information that are easier on the wallet.
What sets this work apart from many others is that it is from a more moderate-liberal Catholic stance. There are some big names here (Raymond Brown, Pheme Perkins, Francis Moloney, Joseph Fitzmyer etc), so you have plenty of well respected theologians represented. What is nice about it being Catholic is that you have the Apocrypha included as well and there isn't as much available on these volumes as there are on the rest of the proto-canonical books. So if you are hoping to understand those texts, this work would be helpful in that regard.
