The Complete Guide to American Denominations and Christian Organizations. Nelson's Guide to Denominations provides essential data on 800+ Protestant and Catholic churches operating in the United States and Canada, plus ecumenical and cooperative associations and parachurch organizations. Every entry reports the name of the group, a brief history, key leaders or a contact person, address, email and/or website, membership stats, unique features, world mission affiliates, and sidebars on special ministry initiatives. The guide also includes a section on trends and prospects for the church in North America and a symposium on the Bible in America.

I happened to see it was a low price, so I thought I'd give it a shot. I would encourage you to do so as well, but that's just because it has some good *general* info about the concept of denominations. The following is going to be a much better alternative if you're wanting to know a great deal about hallmarks of and differences among US denominations (great resource, great value!):
BobMAge: 55-65Gender: male3 Stars Out Of 5This book is full of inaccuracies.May 27, 2011BobMAge: 55-65Gender: maleQuality: 3Meets Expectations: 2I first looked at my own faith group heritage and found a number of mistakes which are easily verifiable. The author confuses the various subgroups, combines the census numbers, has the wrong dates of their origin and misrepresnts key beliefs.
I'm not sure i will bother reading any more.

However he dismisses out of hand some denominations that he appears not to think worthy of consideration.
