Pastor Jason Helopoulos calls parents and church leaders to reclaim the practice of family worship. This indispensable means of grace directs our children to seek Christ daily, preparing them to go out into the world as fully functioning Christian adults, who love Christ and see all of life in relation to Him.
parkerj5 Stars Out Of 5Outstanding Encouragement for Family WorshipJuly 1, 2013parkerjQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5After seeing this book being endorsed by Voddie Baucham and Joel Beeke I was immediately excited and eager to read it. Baucham and Beeke have been very influential in my studies on family worship and both men are truly passionate about worshiping together in the home. So, seeing their names attached to this book brought great anticipation. I must say that I was not disappointed at all.
Jason Helopoulos is probably not a familiar name to many people, but he is a pastor at University Reformed Church in East Lansing, Michigan, where Kevin DeYoung (who writes the forward for this book) is the head pastor. He also is a guest blogger for The Gospel Coalition and I have read his work on their site before. However, an unfamiliar name does not mean that he does not know what he is talking about. This is a short 126 page book that is loaded with encouragement and hope for all of us who struggle with regularly implementing family worship. Many books on family worship are very systematic and detailed in what should and should not take place in family worship, often leaving the reader feeling unfit to lead and like a failure anytime worship doesn't "go well." This is not one of those books. Helopoulos does have guidelines as to what is beneficial and should make up family worship, but his exhortation and charge for men to implement family worship in their homes is also saturated with grace for if and when we do fail or fall into a rut.
Helopoulos urges his readers to remember that family worship is "nothing more than our response in the home to God's magnificent and infinite grace. And it is by that grace that we gather together with our family members to delight in His excellent goodness and eternal glory. Family worship is not something we have to do. Our right standing before God is not impacted by whether we lead our families in worship or not. Christ has already accomplished all for our salvation. Rather, family worship, like other spiritual disciplines, becomes something we want to do." Thinking like this transforms family worship into a delight instead of a duty. It should be our joy to pass down to our children what God has done for us and what He has taught us.
The goal of Christian parents "in raising our children is not to prepare them for going out into the world as fully functioning adults. Our goal, as Christian parents, is to prepare our children for eternity! This has to be the greatest desire of any Christian parent. Everything else in our children's life and world is a distant second in importance." A Neglected Grace is a wonderful tool in the hands of Christian parents for accomplishing this purpose. I was truly blessed by this book and will definitely be reading through it multiple times in the future.
