Do you want a large print compact NASB? Review of the Lockman Foundation Large Print Compact Text Edition in Burgundy Leathertex.

Review of the Lockman Foundation Large Print Compact Text Edition in Burgundy Leathertex.

As usual Lockman did a fine job of packing and shipping the Bible to me. This edition is not expensive. If you have high expectations you will be disappointed. This Bible sells for about $20.00 it is produced in China. Im not making excuses here, but there are some things you need to consider when criticizing a Bible. I know some people have complained about the print and the paper on this edition. They arent wrong. The paper could be a bit more opaque or the print could be a bolder type face. It would be much easier on the eyes if that were the case.

What would the consequences of that be? Well, if the font were a bolder type face and stayed 9 point, it would take up more space on the page necessitating more pages. This edition is already pretty thick at about 1 3/16 not to mention that they have already taken out the references and made it single column paragraph format. There isnt much in the way of helps either. There arent any maps to remove to make this thinner. So what about the paper? Well, same problem if you make a thicker paper that is a higher g.s.m. then the Bible gets thicker. Its just the laws of physics in a finite world folks. I hate to be a bummer.

This Bible tries to fill a niche that definitely is there. Ive heard many people complain that they want a nice clean, compact, text edition of the NASB in paragraph format. The Cambridge Clarion is pretty close, but it costs almost $200 dollars in goatskin. You could opt for the calf split leather for around $105-$115 but that is still pretty expensive. So lets look at what you are getting for $20.00 instead of what you arent getting.

This edition has 9 point font, the words of Christ in red arranged in a single column text format with limited footnotes at the bottom of the page. It has a sewn binding and is covered in leathertex which is modern synthetic leather. It has a cross stamped on the front with a channel around the perimeter. On the spine is printed, New American Standard Bible in large letters from one end to the other. The page edges are gilded. There is one ribbon marker that matches the burgundy color of the cover. The ribbon is pretty thin and narrow. The inner liner is vinyl and color matched to the cover. It is glued down. There are decorative head and foot bands. You have a presentation page printed on Bible paper and not card paper. Then, you have the copyright page, followed by the foreword with translation explanation. Before the text begins you have a table of contents. After the text of the Bible you have one page of the, Parables of Jesus then, four pages of, Important Events in Christs Life According to the Gospels three pages of, Gods Promises and next, two pages of, Old Testament Prophecies Fulfilled in Christ and lastly, one page of, The Miracles of Jesus. The outside cover closed measures 7 5/16 long by 5 1/4 wide by 1 3/16 thick.

This is exactly what it is labeled. You cant expect it to be everything you wanted in a Bible. There are going to be compromises when you make a large print, compact, text edition. I know this review sounds like an apology. I really wanted to like this Bible, but the truth is that it is a bit hard on the eyes due to the seemingly skinny font and thin paper.

For the money though, it is an excellent value and the perfect size to carry with you. The font is much larger than a 6 point font and you really havent gained that much in size over a traditional compact edition. I would recommend this Bible for people with good eyes that arent going to do long reading sessions. It would be good for break room reading or whenever you have a few minutes.

I hate to rate this one down but after reading reviews here and elsewhere I was disappointed with the actual product. It feels fine, and is a great size, but reading it is too much work. Whatever others say, this print on the paper its on, is like Gray on Gray, with enough bleed through to be a 3rd dose of Gray. The font is NOT black, and the paper is NOT white. That combined with a font that in comparison to my other bibles appears at best a size 7 font, with the bare minimum line spacing, its just too much work. Will sell or return this one.

This bible is the right size to hold in my hands and take on the Lord's Day when I gather with the church. I would have preferred an all black letter edition but no one at Foundation publications queried me before it was published. I hope to get a few more before it goes out of print.

For those who love the NASB, paragraph formatting and single-column format, there has been precious little choice. Most of us who like this format like it because it reads like any other book. Yes, I can make finding a verse quickly a little more difficult; however, it reads much more naturally than the "traditional" two-column verse format.

If you have the spare cash to invest in an Oxford Clarion NASB, you can get a great Bible in this format...though if you're like most of us, you'd be deathly afraid of marking in the Bible or taking it out into the weather.

Alternately, you could find an old World Classic Companion Edition NASB--which is a nice Bible, but out of print.

But now, Foundation Publications has addressed until now empty niche in their lineup of NASB Bibles: the NASB Large Print Compact Bible. Here it is, reasonably compact, single column, paragraph format...and for a reasonable price.

I have the Burgundy Leathertex Edition (at the date of my review, only Leathertex, Black or burgundy, are available.) I like Leathertex, and for an inexpensive Bible it works out well. Personally, I would have preferred the Leathertex two-tone (Brown/Light Brown) like in Foundation's Ultrathin Reference Bible. I don't feel too thrilled with the "fancy cross" design on the cover, but I don't consider this a major drawback. I could see this Bible meriting a genuine leather or even calfskin leather cover.

Some other Foundation Bibles that I have use an old-fashioned font that is not too aesthetically appealing (like the above mentioned Ultrathin Reference Bible). This Bible, however, has a nice, crisp modern 9 point font that is clear and easy to read.

Another factor that sometimes Foundation's Bible's have been plagued with is ghosting (where the paper is not opaque enough and the printing from the other side of the paper can be seen through); in this Bible, however, I would consider the ghosting minimal. It's still there, but it's less than I've seen in other low-priced Bibles.

This Bible is only in red letter edition. Personally, I like it, but I could see Foundation appealing to more if it was available in black letter and red letter. Sadly, the red letter is not as vibrant as I've seen in other Bibles. But this is a minor quibble.

The single column text holds approximately 14-15 words across a single line. It's about a word less than the old World Classic Companion bible, and slightly more readable as a result. However, for some reason, they decided to only left-justify the text instead of fully justify it (that is, the right side of the text looks "ragged" rather than lined up neat like the left column...hopefully CBD will publish a few pictures so you can see what I mean.)

There are also no references in this Bible. For a "reader's" edition (what a single-column paragraph Bible is best suited for) rather than a "study" Bible, that is probably a plus, minimizing the clutter on the page. (One minor quibble, not unique to this Bible: regardless of having cross-references, it would be nice to always give the reference for a direct quotation of the Old Testament in the New Testament.)

There are also no maps in the back...again, not vital in a "reader's" Bible. It does have a paper (not glossy) presentation page, a single ribbon marker, the parables of Jesus reference, important events in Christ's life reference, a section on God's promises and section on Christ's miracles. There are no introductions to the books of the Bible. The paper has gold gilting.

All in all, a solid little Bible. I don't know yet how it will hold up under heavy usage, but it looks pretty well constructed. (Please note: like all Leathertex Bibles do NOT leave out in a hot car, unless you want the cover ruined.)
