Classical ArminianSacramento, CaliforniaAge: 35-44Gender: male5 Stars Out Of 5My favorite BibleMay 6, 2015Classical ArminianSacramento, CaliforniaAge: 35-44Gender: maleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The following review is for the NASB Updated Ultrathin Bible, Genuine Leather in Black (ISBN -13:9781581350265. The following topics will be covered: translation, book size, binding, format and price.
Translation: The NASB 1995 Updated Edition is my favorite Bible translation of all. I have used and switched to other translations, but I always go back to the NASB, especially for sermon preparation. It is not a perfect translation, and there are times when I ask why this translation chose to render a certain verse in a certain way. I am bilingual by the way, with English being my second language. However, I prefer reading the Bible in English, and for me the NASB is an easy to read translation despite it being a literal translation.
Book Size: The second thing I look at when purchasing any Bible is the size and dimension. In its bound form, this Bible is exactly 9 inches tall, 6 inches wide and 1 inch thick. It is a thin size Bible, yet it maintains a handsome proportion. Some Bibles are ultra thin but they are 10x7, and when closed, they look like a clipboard instead of a Bible, or when open, it looks like you are reading from a tabloid newspaper. Not so with this Bible. This Bible feels like a book in your hands.
Binding: This cover of this Bible is genuine leather, and it has Smythe-sewn binding. Foundation Publications binds their Bibles really well. You can tell that the genuine leather, although not as supple compared to calfskin or goatskin, will last a long time. This is a durably made Bible. The paper is average in thinness. There is no line matching for this Bible, but the bleed through is acceptable, at least in my opinion. I have a Clarion calf split NASB that has line matching, and frankly I could not say that the Clarion is better than this Bible.
Format: This Bible uses a dual column format. The font size is 9, and I think the 9 point font is just about right. This Bible is also in the paragraph format instead of the verse format. I prefer the paragraph format; reading just flows better that way. I wish this Bible was printed with a black text. I am not a fan of the words of the Lord Jesus in red. Red ink tends to be pale and difficult to read in artificial light. However, the words of the Lord Jesus appear in a maroon or dark red color in this Bible, so I am fine with it. I just wished that all Bible publishers will either use black ink all throughout, or if they want to highlight the Lords words, consider using a darker color like maroon or navy blue or dark green.
Pricing: I got this Bible for under $25 (excluding shipping). This Bible is worth more than $25 in my opinion. Frankly, I would not mind spending more for this Bible if they used calfskin as the cover. I also want to mention that CBD is still the best when it comes to great deals and customer service. Thanks, CBD.
Conclusion: If you are looking for a hand-size Bible that is durable and readable and delightful to hold and read, then this is the Bible for you. I highly recommend this Bible. If you like my review, please vote for it as being helpful. Thank you.
Geekasaurus5 Stars Out Of 5ComfortableMarch 10, 2015GeekasaurusQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The 1977 Lockman Foundation NASB is not the most popular anymore. It is, however, the one I memorized early in my Christian life and I'm going to stay with it. I've heard scholars whom I respect say that the ESV is a good translation and some famous radio teachers are using it. But the NASB is like an old pair of shoes for me...well-worn, perhaps and ugly. But it is comfortable. Its close enough to a word-for-word translation of the original greek, and if I have a question or need to go deeper, there are plenty of study aids to help me.
I need the large print version of this thing now!

I am glad to see that the pronouns that refer to God are capitalized. I feel it is not genuine leather but that's okay. It is a nice size and will lie flat when I am studying. There is a smell to the Bible. I do wish the NASB came in large lettering with the words of Christ in red.
shedrockCanadaAge: 45-54Gender: male2 Stars Out Of 5Not worth the costOctober 31, 2014shedrockCanadaAge: 45-54Gender: maleQuality: 1Value: 1Meets Expectations: 1I was not very impressed with this Bible. Here are some of the issues I found:
1 - Font size is way too small.
2 - Verse numbers are almost, if not as big as the text so it is confusing to me when I read aloud. I actually read the number as well.
3 - Text on the spine is not centered so it just looks really, really bad.
4 - Paper is of a very low quality. Even if I use the Zebrite highlighters, which are usually very good for any bible paper, it still bleeds right through.
5 - The smell coming from the ink used is simply nauseating.
Snyder's SoapboxFruitland, IdahoAge: 35-44Gender: Male3 Stars Out Of 5Review of the Lockman Foundation, Large Print, Ultrathin, Reference Bible, in Black Calfskin Leather.October 30, 2014Snyder's SoapboxFruitland, IdahoAge: 35-44Gender: MaleQuality: 3Value: 3Meets Expectations: 3Im kind of biased because I love the NASB translation and Lockman Foundation but, I know there is always a, but after the review starts the way this one did. The, but in this case is the hit and miss nature of some of the Chinese manufacture processes. This would have been a great Bible if fit and finish quality of the work were better. This is $100.00 Bible and should reflect that in the finished quality. Their was a section in the back where the overly thick card paper edge was glued improperly so that the white paper edge was visible and exposed.
also on the front of the Bible the card paper was splitting on the bottom corner. I dont know if it was not glued well, bent during shipping from China, or the card paper that was used was just to thick and rigid for this application.
The Head and foot areas of the Bible could do with more precise attention to quality. The notches could be smaller.
The ribbon markers could be a thicker, higher grade of ribbon.
Lockman needs to move away from using the higher clay content shiny paper for the presentation pages and maps and move to a flat paper. The glossy ones are too prone to falling out. The presentation page should have been a couple of pages in so that you could actually write on it. It is glued to the card paper that attaches to the binding and cover.
I think if Lockman Foundation left the manufacture of their Bibles that cost less than $50.00 in China it would be alright, but with their middle and top end products they really need to bring it back home. They sent me a copy of the hardcover Charles Stanley text Bible that is made here in America and it was excellent. I loved the paper and the binding. If this Bible got the same treatment it would be worth the $100.00 price tag, but as it is I would have to pass. They did send this Bible to me for free to be reviewed on my blog.
With all the cons, I dont want you to get the idea that this Bible does nothing right. It has a sewn binding, and a calfskin cover. It includes two ribbon markers and it is pretty thin considering that it is a real reference Bible. You get all the benefits of a full reference Bible with a pretty thin profile.
The Side Column Reference Bible I did a review on previously had more attention paid to fit and finish. It was better so I overlooked some of the smaller cons like the opaqueness, excessively notched near the head and foot, and ribbon quality. The opaqueness isnt near as bad as other Bibles Ive seen. I just mention it because it isnt as good as some in the same price range. It seems like a more flexible card paper was used to connect the cover and text block on the side column reference which I love. This one con seems to cause others or make them more noticeable. It is difficult to design the perfect Bible because, well it is subjective. We like what we like though, so you can either make a ton of variations and try to please a lot of people, or you can make a few, really well made Bibles and hopefully sell a bunch of them to a smaller crowd.
The bottom line is that you still get a great translation, in a sewn binding that is very flexible and lays flat, with genuine calfskin cover. I would just suggest they make these here in America or lower the price.
