Product Description

Winner of the Prestigious Christopher Award! - Be inspired by the Catholic saints like never before in My Life with the Saints. This best-selling memoir of spiritual self-discovery is an homage to the Catholic saints who have accompanied Fr. Martin throughout his life. From a lukewarm childhood Catholicism, to the Wharton School of Business, to the executive fast track at General Electric, to the Jesuits, to a media career in Manhattan, Martin has relied on the Catholic saints to intervene in and guide his life. As Martin shares with us his many surprising encounters and journeys with the saints, he convincingly shows how we, too, can be close friends with the saints of the Catholic Church. Read by the author. Unabridged audiobook; 10 CDs; approx 13 hours.

Winner of the Prestigious Christopher Award!

Be inspired by the Catholic saints like never before in My Life with the Saints by James Martin, SJ.

"Over the past few years, whenever I've felt particularly close to a saint, I've spent some time writing down what drew me to him or her. Some of these essays reflect a devotion based on the public actions and well-known writings of a saint; others are rooted in a more personal response to a hidden part of a saint's life—a small, almost unnoticed, piece of his or her story that has affected me in a deep way. The memoir is organized chronologically, so that the saints are introduced more or less in the sequence in which I first encountered them."—from "An Introduction," My Life with the Saints

Author Bio

JAMES MARTIN, S.J., is a Jesuit priest, author and associate editor of America, the national Catholic magazine (he also blogs at “In All Things,” the new editorial blog from America magazine). Father Martin graduated from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business in 1982, where he received a bachelor’s degree in finance. After working for six years in corporate finance with General Electric Co., he entered the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) in 1988. For his regency, he worked for two years with the Jesuit Refugee Service in Nairobi, Kenya, where he helped East African refugees start small businesses. In 1995, Father Martin began his theology studies at the Weston Jesuit School of Theology, in Cambridge, Mass., where he received his master’s degree in divinity in 1998, and his master’s in theology in 1999. While in Cambridge, he also worked as a chaplain at a Boston prison. After completing his Jesuit studies, he was ordained a Catholic priest in June 1999. Besides his articles in America and other Catholic publications like Commonweal, U.S. Catholic and The (London) Tablet, Father Martin has written for The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and other national newspapers and websites, including beliefnet.com and salon.com. He has commented on religion and spirituality in the national and international media, and has appeared in venues as diverse as National Public Radio’s “Fresh Air with Terry Gross,” PBS’s “The Newshour with Jim Lehrer,” Fox News Channel’s “The O’Reilly Factor,” as well as on all the major networks, CNN, MSNBC, the History Channel, the BBC and Vatican Radio. Besides his editorial, publishing and media work, Father Martin conducts seminars and retreats and assists on Sundays at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola in New York City. James Martin, S.J., tells the listener much about himself in this memoir featuring 16 of his favorite saints. Associate editor of America magazine since 1998, Father Martin is the author of six books and editor of several others. He also comments on religion and spirituality for radio and television, including venues as diverse as “The O’Reilly Factor” and the “Colbert Report.” Listeners can visit him on Facebook.

From the Introduction

Over the past few years, whenever I've felt particularly close to a saint, I've spent some time writing down what drew me to him or her. Some of these essays reflect a devotion based on the public actions and well-known writings of a saint; others are rooted in a more personal response to a hidden part of a saint's life - a small, almost unnoticed, piece of his or her story that has affected me in a deep way. The memoir is organized chronologically, so that the saints are introduced more or less in the sequence in which I first encountered them."
