I got this book from the library and totally loved it! In fact, it was so great I told my sister she had to read it too! She loved it as much as I did. The characters were great, the story was moving, and the writing was superb. The author could have you crying one minute and laughing the next! You have got to read this book!
"My Hands Came Away Red" is a very well-written Christian suspense/general fiction novel. The details were so vivid and rich that I was immersed in the story, and I'm still half-convinced these events really did happen. The characters were vividly real, complex, and acted in very realistic (and varied) ways to the situations they faced.
The high level of suspense was mainly from the physical danger they were in but also from relationship tensions. The main characters were Christian teens, and their faith and understanding was typical of teens (and many adults). They struggled realistically with their view of God after seeing the horrors and experiencing the hardship they faced.
There was no sex. There was a minor amount of "he cussed" style bad language and one instance of fake bad language. The story was not gory. I'd highly recommend this novel. I had hoped the author had written more novels that I could buy and read, but--to my sorrow--so far she hasn't.
This is an amazingly well written story - not your typical "feel good" or happy story. In fact, some might be disappointed with the ending.
This book is so far from the normal "christian fiction" that is out there, I hate to even classify it that way. (I have lots of favorite christian authors .... so I'm not knocking this genre) The relationships between the teens, and between Cori and God are so real that I almost felt they were inside my head. I truly loved that McKay was not afraid to show the truth about the fears and anger we ALL feel towards God at times. It is how we channel the anger or fear that is most important ... and McKay does it beautifully.
Don't read this book if you want an easy read, filled with lots of happiness and fun times with a happily ever after ending. You will be disappointed.
But if you want a book that is raw with emotion, want to read about characters that are amazingly real, and even learn about the struggles in Indonesia and the bloodshed in that country .... pick this up.
It quickly moved up to my all-time favorite books. Please McKay ... write something again, quickly!! :-)
This book was fantastic! I did not want to put it down - the author made the characters come alive. It was also an eye opener for the turmoil in Indonesia. I look forward to the next book by Lisa McKay!
