Sometimes all that you have is a mustard seed of faith. But that may be all you need. In the course of a few years Lynn Coulter lost both her parents, her husband lost his job, and she had an accident which dislocated her left shoulder. When it rains, it pours, but in the midst of trials and doubts that arise from them, God still speaks. These collected essays tell of the small and profound ways that God speaks through His Word, nature and the kindness of others, to keep the seed of faith alive.
I am still here not the same person I once was, perhaps, but thats okay. Id rather be tried and tested and know Jesus than to have sailed through life and never reached out to find Him. (p. 173) The cover of the book itself was soothing a small bird perched upon the handle of a shovel. The title intrigued me Mustard Seeds Thoughts on the Nature of God and Faith. As I picked up this volume, I had a general idea of what I was about to read, but I had no idea how timely the message was going to be in my own life. You see, God designs even the details of our lives, and He knew that I needed the message shared in Lynn Coulters newest book. I am so very thankful to God and encouraged that He has allowed this opportunity in my life, and it is my great privilege to share this with you!
The quote I chose to open this review is a succinct summation of the awesome message found upon the pages of this book. Each chapter is arranged in a 6-10 page format, and within that brief passage Lynn Coulter shares an experience in her life that showed her a glimpse of Gods hand in the midst of her circumstances. Sometimes her experiences are difficult and hard to understand, sometimes her faith is challenged to the point of giving up on Gods presence in her life altogether, but always God is faithful to draw her to Himself. Lynn shares her spiritual journey with us in vignettes that everyone can easily relate to. Each chapter closes with a Seeds of Faith prayer and a passage of scripture. The book is not meant to preach but to encourage Christians to daily and continuously seek Gods presence in their lives no matter what circumstances come our way.
For you see, we all must learn the truth that the Gospel teaches and that Lynn Coulter shares with us so humbly in her book that Gods strength and direction is always present in our lives and that He is working all things for our good and His glory even when we dont understand. Thats why people who have Jesus can go forward even when their x-rays come back marked with shadows, or when they struggle with loneliness or disability. Their faith has flowered into a peace that transforms hearts and spirits. The joy of knowing Jesus grows into the hope of heaven. (p. 125)

Coulter, a magazine journalist, takes the familiar biblical story of faith the size of a mustard seed to illustrate how God can use even the most horrendous "lifequakes" as faith-builders. Coulter opens her compilation of life essays with a personal story from her childhood, when the concept of mustard seed faith was first planted after a teacher offered the class mustard seed charms as an attendance reward. Though Coulter eventually lost the charm, she never forgot its message. Years later, after the death of her parents, her husband's job loss, financial setbacks, and her own shattered shoulder, the author's faith was in pieces. She wrestled long and hard to regain closeness with God. In each of these tender topical chapters, Coulter uses everyday happenings from nature, parenting, work, illnesses, and church to reaffirm a single lesson: God is intimately involved in every aspect of life and he cares with a watchful affection. Readers will find strength from Coulter's story and solace in God's promises regarding faith and grace. (Sept.) Copyright 2008 Reed Business Information.
