Get your highlighters and sticky notes ready because you are definitely going to need them while reading this book. The introduction of the book sets the stage for the journey that lies ahead. We are all on a journey, in fact it is basically the same journey. Wouldn't it be nice to have a road map or GPS system that we could just input our current location and then Heaven as our ultimate destination and then get the perfect route?

While we don't exactly have that tool we do have some that are ultimately more powerful. Each of the sections of the book helps to break that journey down into segments and apply tools that will guide us through each of these points in our journeys.

Francis Chan, Eugene Peterson, and Bill Hybels' names are on the cover but there are ten other authors that are included in the book. I enjoyed reading the insights of such varied and esteemed Christian leaders. The groupings of the segments made it a cohesive book that flowed nicely from one segment to the next even though there were so many different authors.

I think you will be blessed by this book. Parts of it are sure to give you affirmation that you are on the right road and headed in the right direction. Other parts will give you encouragement to keep pressing on towards the end destination. Throughout the book we are constantly reminded that no matter what we plan, God still directs our steps (Proverbs 16:9) and that is the best guidance we will ever receive.

I received a copy of this book to facilitate my review.

Ever go on a long trip? Unless you planned specific breaks, things/places to look at, lunch/snacks, bathroom, by the time you reach your destination you will be exhausted and maybe not in a good humor. Now what would this trip be like if you had no idea of where you were going? Well take heart eighteen authors have joined forces to give us some idea of what to expect and how to take "The Road We Must Travel". In Five parts, four or three chapters to a part, we are given tools to help us as we travel along the way. We all have our road and we all need a guide so I believe that this book is for everyone. It would also make a great gift for friends and family to help them in their journey.

The Road We Must Travel - A Personal Guide for Your Journey is composed of eighteen chapters covering topics such as "The Need for Honest Self-Assessment," Reading the Bible Spiritually" and "The Art of Managing Conflict." The authors of this book are well known and respected pastors and authors such as Francis Chan, Bill Hybels and Eugene Peterson.

The short chapters in this book make it an easy read. However, they are packed with years of experience and counsel. One of the chapters I especially appreciated was The Art of Managing Conflict, by Gordon Macdonald. He explains that managing conflict is a five-step process.\

    1. Accept that conflict - the collision of two or more perspectives is a necessary ingredient of any human relationship.

    2. Recognize that each of us brings "Baggage" from past experiences into present dealings.

    3. Remember that conflict need not be - should not be - about winning or losing.

    4. Decide to limit any kind of disagreement to the issue.

    5. Reach the terminal point in a conflict where adult versions of "sorrys" are said and solutions found.

As someone who dislikes conflict and would like to avoid it at all costs, I have learned that it is necessary in almost every relationship. However, these five steps have given me confidence that I can deal with conflict in healthy ways and even strengthen already existing relationships.

This book would be great for someone just graduating and starting out in their adult lives. It also would be great reading for anyone in any stage of life. I have enjoyed reading it and will probably read some of my favorite chapters again.

This book was provided to me in exchange for a fair, honest review. I am not obligated to give it a positive review.

    SUMMARY:

Sometimes in life, everyone takes a wrong turn, encounters a detour, hits construction, or just plain loses the way_but in The Road We Must Travel, several well-known authors and pastors lend their reassurance, knowledge and biblical understanding to mentor and help get us back on course. Through personal stories coupled with scriptural lessons, the contributors help navigate conflict, trouble, suffering, opportunities, spirituality, failure, as well as simplicity, rest, reflection and discipleship.

    A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:

Written with a fresh perspective by many different people who are in various leadership positions, The Road We Must Travel is a very well-woven book. Included authors are Francis Chan (author of Crazy Love), Bill Hybels (senior pastor of the large Willow Creek Community Church), Eugene Peterson (The Message) and several other ministry leaders. From finding quiet peace and simplicity in life to plowing through the toughest of times, I found this book full of useful ideas and reasons to keep God centered in my plans and struggles; thus, providing a life-map to live life for God, how He would want us to live. Afterall, everyone needs a GPS system at some point in life to get back on the right path.
