Jesus revealed himself to a young, brash, Pakistani Muslim. But he didnt just reveal himself; he turned Naeem Fazals world upside down.
Moving from Kuwait to Charleston, South Carolina, had been an adventure. Surrendering his life to Jesus Christ was actual treason. And yet, Jesus brought Fazal the most powerful peace he had ever experienced: It filled the room. It grew roots in my heart and in my soul. It intoxicated me.
In this riveting memoir, Fazal describes how God used extraordinary means to bring a young, underachieving, Muslim immigrant through Desert Storm, across the oceans, into college, and ultimately to pastor a Christian church in North Carolina. He demonstrates that no character flaw, no distance, no cultural chasm is too great for Jesus to reach across.
Fazal is candid about his shortcomings, practical about the challenges of cross-cultural engagement, and ultimately inspiring that God is capable of far more than we have grown to expect. He says, Jesus consistently, stubbornly refuses to limit himself to my expectations. Which makes getting to know him an unfolding adventure of epic proportions.
Whether you are a Muslim, Christian, or neither, Ex-Muslim makes a compelling case that life with Jesus Christ is a true adventure.
Naeem Fazal was born and raised as a Muslim in Kuwait. He came to the United States shortly after the Gulf War of 1990. In 1992, he had a supernatural experience with Christ that changed the course of his life. He was ordained in 2001 at Seacoast Church. In 2006, with the help of Seacoast Church, the ARC, and Mosaic LA, he planted Mosaic Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. Naeem has been featured inRelevant magazine, Leadership Journal, and Charlottemagazine.
Kitti Murray and her husband, Bill, are part of an urban church plant network in Downtown Atlantas Old Fourth Ward neighborhood, where they also live. Kitti is a mother of four grown sons, three daughters-in-law, and two beautiful grandkids. When not writing, planning events for Apartment Life, or watching her grandbabies, Kitti can be found biking to her favorite coffee shop.
Erwin R. McManus (BA, University of North Carolina; MDiv, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary) serves as lead pastor and cultural architect of Mosaic, a diverse, multi-ethnic church based in Los Angeles, California. As founder of Awaken, an entrepreneurial community, Erwin collaborates with a team of dreamers and innovators who specialize in the field of developing and unleashing personal and organizational creativity. A national and international consultant on culture, change, leadership, and creativity, he partners with Bethel Theological Seminary as a futurist and distinguished lecturer. He is the author of the ECPA Silver Medallion Award-winning book, An Unstoppable Force, and Seizing Your Divine Moment, Uprising: A Revolution of the Soul, and The Barbarian Way.

Therefore, this book was important to me and my praying for Muslims. It showed me that the Holy Spirit uses many means of bringing Muslims to the Cross. I was so gripped by Naeem's testimony that I now find myself carefully following his Charlotte church on Facebook and praying for it. A worthwhile read!

The author is now the pastor of a unique church that he and his wife started. I've read a lot of books of Muslims coming to Christ, but this was one of my favorites!
ldesherl5 Stars Out Of 5Ex-Muslim by Naeem FazalAugust 25, 2014ldesherlQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This book, mostly memoir and part motivational, is written by a Pastor of a current multiethnic congregation. Born and raised in Kuwait and raised as a Muslim, Fazal and his family lived through the Gulf war. He and his family were still living in Kuwait before they emigrated to the United States, to make their home in South Carolina. Though conversion to Christ was seen as treason by his Muslim parents, Fazal turned his life to Jesus. Fazal found a real purpose and zest in life that led to a full life of marriage and ministry.
I found this book personal, encouraging, and challenging. That was pretty much what I expected out of this book. I found this book hard to follow at times, and I was unclear as to where his Pakistani origins fit in. Fazal is very honest about himself before and after he came to know Christ. When he and his family were still in Kuwait, one of Fazal's brother's shared his faith with Fazal, challenging him, "Ask Jesus to reveal Himself to you. He will, in His time." But it wasn't until they came to the US to live in South Carolina, that Fazal turned to Jesus, encountering both Jesus and the devil in his quest for the supernatural. I'm aware and Fazal is aware, that many people, even believers, will dismiss him as mentally unstable. Yet God is not limited by conventional means in revealing Himself to us and reports tell us that He often reveals Himself to Muslims through dreams and visions. In closed or restricted societies, like North Korea, He is reported to work in this way. This book shows the deep divide between what this author calls the Western style of "doing church" and actually "pursuing the Savior," and I wonder how much our Western model of organized Christendom can actually drive us from, rather than to, Jesus Himself. The author's baggage, while real, was basically uninfluenced by our Western mind-set.
I recommend every person to read this personal but challenging book. I recommend every Christian read it and not only to learn about how best to reach Muslims. We need to read it because Fazal helps us see the deep divide between Americal Christianity and biblical discipleship and between "churchianity" and following Jesus. We will gain insight into how to reach Muslims and question the quality of our relationships with God. I recommend that every non-believers, especially Muslims, read this book because it lets them that Jesus can be to them what they look for in Allah, and far more.

This book is a great testament to God's providence and amazing, pursuing grace. It is the story of Naeem Fazeel and His radical encounter with God. Naeem grew up in a Muslim home in the middle east, and when he came to the United States for college he was not expecting the radical changes that would take place in his life. God miraculously found him and got ahold of his heart and this book tells his story. The book provides valuable insight into the life of a muslim family, as well as what it is like for a muslim to convert to christianity. I found myself incredibly fascinated by so many of the stories that are told in this short book. Though I didn't agree with everything found in the book, I greatly appreciated the passion with which it was written. The book overall was relatable to even believers that have not faced what he has faced, or come from a muslim background. He is open about the trials that he faced and how God used them to grow him in his faith. Naeem who is now a church planter/pastor has a powerful testimony of how God rescued him.

Ex-Muslim: How One Daring Prayer to Jesus Changed a Life Forever (Thomas Nelson, 2014) is the story of how Fazal came to pray that prayer, the unexpected answer, and what happened next.
Fazal, was born and raised a Muslim in Kuwait. He ended up in North Carolina, and experienced a change that resulted in him leaving his Muslim faith in favor of Christianity. Not only did he become a Christian, but he has become a church-planting pastor.
Ex-Muslim is his story, and it is a fascinating story, a story which grasps the tensions inherent in a conversion story of this type. I was hooked from the beginning. The story is fascinating, it's written by a master story-teller, the tension between the old and the new, between the Muslim faith of his childhood, and the Christian faith that he now claims as his own is compelling. The evidence of Jesus in his life can't be denied.
As an autobiography, this book makes for a great read. As an account of how God, how Jesus, how the Holy Spirit works in the lives of non-believers this is a ‘must-read' book. But beyond that, this is a not so subtle reminder that Jesus' Great Commission is still as applicable today as it was when He gave it to the Apostles 2000 years ago (Matt 28:19-20). Someone shared the gospel with this militantly anti-Christian, and at the proper time, Fazal accepted the good news. But he didn't stop there. His life since has been one of proclaiming Jesus.
With whom have YOU shared the gospel recently?
