Throughout the book, Patterson uses Paul as an example of someone who had muscular faith. He uses what Paul wrote in his epistles and shows how we modern-day Christians should apply that to our current lives. One aspect of God that Patterson uses throughout his book is the fact that God is a warrior. He quotes 1 Corinthians 15:55, "O death, where is your victory? O, death where is your sting?" He uses the analogy that our life is a battle and we need to be fully equipped for this conflict by having a strong faith. We need to be armed and prepared for the challenges life throws at us.
Muscular Strength is a book that will assist the reader in growing closer to Christ. The book is ideal for anyone 15 years old and up who wishes to honor the Lord by standing strong for Him and serving Him better. Parker OLeary, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com

Subtitled How to strengthen your heart, soul and mind for the only challenge that matters, the book explores how to discover the excitement, passion, and thrill of being fully and vigorously alive.
Muscular Faith is a collection of short chapters organized into four sections. Scripture references and quotes by well-known contemporary Christian are liberally sprinkled throughout. Of particular value to new believers is the final section called The Essentials. Here, Patterson offers brief, practical tips on how to fight the good fight of faith with prayer, mortification of sin, and Sabbath rest.
While the title may lead you to believe that the author advocates for a brawny Christianity suitable only to construction workers and cowboys, Muscular Faith celebrates many ordinary believers, like Patterson's grandmother, whose simple devotion is heroic in its own way. Exodus 15:3 says, "The LORD is a warrior; the LORD is his name." With the biblical truth revealed in resources like this new book, we can follow God into all of life's battles.

Good book for a new Christiian and even better for a seasoned Christian. The world is doing everything it can to keep us from God. Ben Patterson hits the nail on the head. There is "Good Hard" and "Bad Hard." We need to get on the field and run the race. Not to settle for sitting in the stands. I think you will enjoy this book. I did.

pastor2519West Point, UTAge: 55-65Gender: male4 Stars Out Of 5finishing well is about life in the kingdom,August 19, 2011pastor2519West Point, UTAge: 55-65Gender: maleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4"We are not born again by good works; we are born again for good works". Ben Patterson tells us about the difference in "Muscular Faith: How to Strengthen Your Heart, Soul and Mind for the Only Challenge That Matters". He reminds us that the Apostle Paul says that the intent of grace is to make us God's masterpiece. Starting with the premise that we don't do good works in order to be saved, we do good works because we are saved, Patterson takes us on a journey of what life looks like inside the kingdom.
The concept of "finishing well" as Paul wrote about in his epistles, is one that intrigues me. And with Paul's life as a part of the background, the reader is allowed a glimpse of the ‘muscular faith' that kingdom life involves. In other words, Christianity is not for wimps. It's also not for people who think that as we have to do to be considered a good Christian is show up at church once in a while. Community is a part of the faith that God graces us with, and that He wants us to experience.
Accepting the call requires a conscious decision, the stakes are high but there definitely are obstacles. And this is not a short term mission trip. It requires commitment, and perseverance.
Especially helpful are the chapters found in PART 4: The Essentials. Prayer, Sabbath, joy, and a host of other things keep us on the narrow path that leads to Jesus.
A pleasant read, with lots of insight from an experienced pastor.

WordmachineGrayson, GAAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5A Great Resource About Spiritual RacesAugust 19, 2011WordmachineGrayson, GAAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5"Muscular Faith" concentrates a lot on what a spiritual race is. It's a race that we don't run alone; Jesus runs the race with us when we allow Him to. The book explains that we don't have to hurry to be the first one to finish this kind of a race; we can take longer than the runners in front of us to finish the race as long as we keep moving forward and do the best we can before we reach the finish line.
What I like about this book is that the chapters help prepare you to run your spiritual race, to understand better how to draw closer to God while you are running your race, and how to try to have a good finish to your race. You can mess up a lot during the race and not be disqualified from continuing the race as long as you get back on the right track. The information in the chapter about the Sabbath helped me to come to the conclusion that you need rest before you continue your race again each day, that's why God created each new day to start at sundown and that you also have to take time for Sabbath rest each week because the race you run during other parts of the week isn't happening on that day.
I recommend this book to all followers of Jesus and to people who are interested in becoming followers of Jesus because it will help them learn what a spiritual race is and how to start and continue the race throughout their lives.

Muscular Faith looks to answer some questions that fall upon the minds of most Christians, at some point, questions such as: What should our faith look like and what equips us to make it a reality within our lives?, What does it look like to run the race that Paul has envisioned all faithful Christians running?
Through the pages of this book, the author, Ben Patterson, encourages the reader to persevere through the normal difficulties of life. His encouragement comes through an easy to read book that flows freely and consistently from beginning to end, using many Biblical, as well as, personal references and references from many of Christiandom's premier minds.
All in all, this book is a recommended purchase for those established in their beliefs, not those who are still trying to formulate them.
