Publisher's Description

When a celebrated ACTOR IS FOUND MURDERED IN HIS DRESSING ROOM, all signs point to Drew's old flame. But behind the curtains nothing is what it seems and this quickly becomes his MOST puzzling case YET.

Just as Drew Farthering thinks his life has calmed down some, Fleur Landis, a former girlfriend, reappears, in dire need of his help. She's married now, no longer an actress--but the lead actor in her former troupe's production of The Mikado has been murdered, and Fleur is the police's number one suspect.

Drew would rather focus on his fiancée, Madeline Parker, and their upcoming wedding, but he can't leave Fleur and her family in the lurch--even if she did break his heart once. As Drew, Nick, and Madeline begin investigating, they discover more going on behind the scenes of the theater troupe than could ever have been imagined. It seems nearly everyone had a motive, and alibis are few and far between.

Both the murder case and the presence of the beautiful, exotic Fleur put a heavy strain on Drew and Madeline's relationship. Will their still-young romance survive the pressure?

"Deering gives us an enchanting mystery set around an England country estate in the 1930s... Rules of Murder is a wonderful, inspirational novel for those of you who love a good murder mystery."--Fresh Fiction

As always I loved to read this series. These are easy reads and just so good. They still remind me a little of an older Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys type. This one had me crying for a little while also. I received this book from Bethany House for a fair and honest opinion.

Murder at the Mikado is the third book in Julianna Deerings Drew Farthering mystery series. Drew and his fiance, Madeline Parker, are again enveloped in a murder mystery that requires their skills to solve. This mystery however is one that Madeline would not like Drew to investigate as the instigator of the case is Fleur Landis, the scarlet woman from Drews past.

Fleur is now married to the business manager for Drews estate and is the mother of four-year-old Peter. No longer an actress, but still involved in an ex-lovers theater group, Fleur is the prime suspect when the lead actor in the production of the Mikado is murdered. How Drew, Madeline, and their assistant, Nick, solve the murdersoon to be murdersis the stuff of which all great mysteries are composed. Besides the murders, Drew and Madeline must work through the emotions of defending Drews ex-love.

This novel is set in Britain and the accents and word usages add to the charm of the characters. Quotes from the Mikado by Gilbert and Sullivan are sprinkled throughout the book and also add to the charm.

Youll find yourself hard-pressed to solve the case before Drew and Madeline Deering has enough twists and turns to keep even the most assiduous mystery reader guessing. I loved the book and will have to go back and read the first two in the series, Rules of Murder, and Death by the Book.

Julianna Deering is the pen name of multi-published novelist DeAnna Julie Dodson. As related in her bio printed in the book, DeAnna has always been an avid reader and a lover of storytelling, whether on the page, the screen, or the stage. "Murder at the Mikado" by Juianna Deering is the third book in the "detective" Drew Farthering series... and so far has got to be my favorite. Set in 1930's England, the murders take place in a theatre where each of the troupe has a pretty good reason to commit the crimes.

If you have a chance to read the first two books, "Rules of Murder" and "Death by the Book", I would highly recommend that as you get to really know all the main characters. I love how the author is developing Drew's and Madeline's characters and that they are not perfect people. I appreciated the honesty in their relationship and how past mistakes can come to haunt. I enjoyed the twists and turns in the plot (like the other books), but I must admit to cheering when the killer was caught. (Okay, there is more to it than that but I'm not going to say more so I don't give anything away!)

Although these books are "Christian" books, they are fabulously not "preachy" but offer a gentle insight into the life and fallibility of believers all while trying to figure out who the killer is...of all things!

After reading this book, my guess is that, like me, you'll be calling, "Encore! Encore!"

Disclosure of Material Connection: I was provided a free copy of this book by Bethany House Publishers in exchange for my honest opinion.

In Murder at the Mikado, Julianna Deering brings us another charming tale of intrique in the Drew Farthering Mystery series. Caught in circumstances that can only lead to lose-lose decisions, we wonder how Drew, the aristocratic would-be detective, can extract himself and his bride-to-be from dismal results. Writing with a clever dose of humor and the appeal of England in the 1930s, the author keeps us reading with one surprise after another. Deerings mysteries dont disappoint, instead they entertain and inspire. Murder at the Mikado nudged me to examine my insecurities to prevent them from hindering me from following Gods path.

So dear reader, Julianna Deering is back again with another installment in the "Drew Farthering Mysteries"! This book "Murder at the Mikado" is the third volume in this series and quite lives up to all the hype I gave the first book when I reviewed it last summer. Finally getting to sit down and read this book was something of a monumental effort but once I was settled and dug into the book it fairly rolled along and I quite enjoyed it over the course of an afternoon!

Drew and Madeline are now engaged and are fast approaching their wedding date when in whirls a past flame of Drew's. Actress Fleur Landis may be married with a child now but that's no damper to her personal dramatics as she is accused of murdering the lead actor- and her former lover- from her old troupe! When Fleur and her husband Landis, Drew's new business manager comes begging for help Drew- who never wished to see Fleur again- relents and takes on the case.

The case progresses though not all is what it seems. Not all is okay at home either as Madeline begins to feel the pressures of their impending marriage set under the specter of charming bombshell Fleur. Soon enough the chase quickens and as more bodies start dropping the hunt for the killer is in full force! But what goes on behind the scenes and behind the public eye is the most important- for both the case and for Drew and Madeline!

So as I said at the beginning I really enjoyed this book! I grew up on mystery novels but as I got older that genre really dropped from my rotation, partially because I thought I'd grown too old for them and partially because I wasn't finding that genre written in Christian fiction. I am ever so glad that that is changing now with Deering's "Drew Fathering Mysteries"!

In particular I appreciated that the book is well paced and written, and also that the mystery is well concealed until the end- I may have had my suspicions as to who the guilty party was but right up until the end Deering held all her cards tightly! Also, I really liked how this read as straight up clean cut mystery. The mentions of God or spiritual themes are hard to come by in this book but I didn't feel like that detracted from the character or story being told. It has been previously well established where Drew and Madeline are with God and I didn't think it needed to be re-addressed with club-like agility. (But that's just me!) If you are looking for something super-spiritually laced look elsewhere because this is nearly pure mystery/adventure! Additionally, I appreciated that some of the elements present in the first book, like social drinking, were dropped from this installment. While they may be period appropriate, and may be useful tools in characterizing the baddie, fiend, and rogue in a novel I don't find them appropriate for the hero of a Christian novel and I was glad to see them gone!

Something that I loved to see in this book was the full attention that Deering gave to working in references to Gilbert and Sullivan's works. The title of the book comes from Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Mikado" as this is one of the two plays that the theater troupe is preforming when the murder takes place. Personally, though I have not listened to all of their works I have a great fondness for The Pirates of Penzance and was charmed to find bits of it scattered throughout the book!

All in all I have no complaints about this lovely period mystery novel that Julianna Deering has produced and I am happy to recommend it to all of you!

    Final rating: 5
