Sitting down to read Murder, Mayhem, & a Fine Man was very intriguing. It was as if I was sitting down with a girlfriend catching up on her life. Burneys witty writing drew me into the banter between Dr. Bell and her fine man, Jazz. Dr. Brown or those that love her call her Bell is a forensic psychologist celebrating her birthday with her sister. In walks a fine man, a very fine man, Jazz, who is a police detective. The attraction is instantaneous and dynamic. Before the night is over Bell and Jazz are at a crime scene. Bell realizes she may know the killer.The appeal for me is the complexity of the characters with their past issues. I loved how spiritual threads of grace, compassion, and forgiveness with splashes of humor and sagacity weave through the entire story. Burney also tackles two difficult issues facing us today especially in the church, cults and remarriage. Coming from a toxic church myself, it was easy to relate to the abused. But it also gave me hope that you can move past whatever has happened to you even if it is in the church. Like I said, this intricate story is a must read!

Claudia Mair Burney did the dogone thing! Amanda Bell Brown is a sassy and clever heroine. Sizzling dialogue, authentic description, and ever mounting conflict made it top notch reading. I couldn't stop laughing at the humor, was moved by the underlying spiritual message and was simply delighted to find a really well written novel. I look forward to future titles by this author.

Ill stop here with the plot as I dont want to be a spoiler, but rest assured the remaining plot points make the book well worth the read. Though many suspense books are driven by their plot, and this one is not weak in that area by any means, it is the characters, vividly and clearly drawn through their dialogue and interactions that keep you reading long into the night. Witty, sassy, straightforward diva, Amanda Bell Brown comes to life in the book. Its been a while since Ive read a book where the main characters voice really cemented the character in my mind without any physical description. And, heres the bonus. Not only does Bell live large in this book, she is joined with her fellow cast mates, each leaping onto the page with their dialogue and relationships. Murder, Mayhem, and A Fine Man, is the first in the Amanda Bell Brown Mystery series with to Death, Deceit, and Some Smooth Jazz be released in April. Claudia Mair Burney's book is like a big ole bowl of scrumptious gumbo. Its got plenty of meat and substance, and has just the right amount of sassy wit to season it deliciously! There is a particular scene involving a Southern televangelist that had me chuckling out loud and to this day makes me think of cheese in a slightly different way, an Amanda Bell way. For Amanda Bell is not just smart, but she's funny and authentically down to earth. The spiritual issues that she faces are the kinds of thing that many women struggle with in today's culture... spiritual abuse and toxic relationships, career challenges, body image issues, lust and abstinence. Claudia Mair Burney has "been there, done that" in real life. She's faced her own monsters and fought back through God's grace. She still struggles. She wins some battles and loses others. But she keeps on fighting for her dreams and her faith. She's got the wounds and the laurels that go along with that. As a writer, her works reflect her reality. Her stories are not just made-up tales. Yes, they are works of fiction, but they are still true because they come from her very big heart and her very real life.
