Andreola Review

Arthur Bornstein created a memory system decades ago. The illustrations on his materials are outdated and from that era (1970s bellbottom jeans, etc.). Yet when I am asked, “How did you teach your children to memorize their multiplication facts?” I put on a smile, because I found what worked for us. These silly, overly simplistic, kooky, cartooned flash cards gave my children definite associations between numbers to hold in their imaginations and later bring to mind with a clue from me.

To start, I showed my children a picture card depicting a football game. Using the notes for the teacher on the back of the card, I read, “Picture a football field with team 9 against team 5 playing on the 45-yard line.” Just before supper for review, I tested for this fact by way of a piece of scrap paper with “9 x 5” on it. I asked, “Team 9 and team 5 played on which yard line?” The next morning I presented the next card and that afternoon tested for both facts. After some weeks of adding facts gradually and testing daily, my children could write answers to a whole column of facts placed in any order with only the occasional silly clue for association from me.

Before using Mr. Bornstein’s memory technique, they had experienced months of trouble trying to memorize by rote alone, and I was perturbed. Now years later, if you ask any of my adult children, “Team 9 and team 5 played on what yard line?” they would probably respond with “45” and a smile. The 54 cards (11” x 7”) come with a teacher CD and student CD.
