Product Description

For over a century she has stood in the shadow of her famous husband. Now she steps into the light. Mary Custis Lee was a woman of contrasts-a woman with a will of iron whose faith in God sustained her through years of separation from her husband, the deaths of two children, and the heartbreaking transforamtion of her magnificent estate into a military cemetery. Based on previously unpublished private journals and letters spanning half a century, this is the story of an articulate, passionate, and selfless patriot worthy of her heritage as the great-granddaughter of Martha Washington and consort to one of the most revered military leaders in American history.

Publisher's Description

Many know about her husband, Robert E. Lee, and her great-grandmother, Martha Washington; many have visited the cemetery that now occupies her family estate. But few today know much about Mary Custis Lee herself. Chronically ill and often in excruciating pain, Mary raised seven children, faithfully witnessing to her husband for years before his conversion. She retained her dignity and faith throughout a fruitless, heartbreaking attempt to win compensation for the confiscation of her home and possessions. History is never more powerful than when it provides a role model for enduring hardship with sturdy and radiant faith. Mary Custis Lee is such an example.

As a native Virginian I thought I knew a bit about the Lees, but I was amazed at the TREASURES revealed by Mr. Perry of which I was unaware! Mary Custis Lee exemplifies a godly woman's quest to follow her Lord faithfully through life's most challenging moments. John Perry writes in a winsome style often quoting Mary's own prayer journal and countless letters. His research demonstrates the depths he plumbed to bring Mary and her family to life. From watching Washington burn during the War of 1812 to living through the fall of Richmond in 1865, her window on American history commands the reader's attention from start to finish. Mary's trials, triumphs, joys, sorrows (there were so many!), resilience, love, and her REST in the sovereignty of God will encourage you.
