Publisher's Description

A Mother's Journey is the powerful true story that is sure to offer undeniable hope to all. As she soaks in one of the last days of a perfect vacation in Costa Rica, Scalise has no idea that she is about to face an incomprehensible tragedy that will claim the life of her twelve-year-old daughter, Brooke. Hidden discoveries and simultaneous events too parallel to be deemed coincidence reveal that Brooke's life had a greater purpose and her soul was preparing for the journey home. As she begins to unravel Brooke's messages, somewhere between conviction and proof, Jennifer finds an unshakable faith in eternal life and peace, knowing that Brooke remains by her side with a love unabridged by death.

Author Bio

Jennifer L. Scalise is a devoted, single mother who resides in St. Charles, Missouri, with her two children. After the accidental death of her twelve-year-old daughter, Brooke, Jennifer brought to life the Brooke Scalise Foundation, a nonprofit organization that represents Brooke's life passions by enriching the lives of junior high school youth by granting funds for them to attend church camp. Alongside her efforts in building awareness about the dangers of traveling to third world countries, Scalise is a member of Concerned Families for ATV Safety and continues to share her strength with others who have lost a loved one.

Editorial Reviews

Local author Jennifer Scalise’s first book is a masterpiece of creativity, from the included family photos and drawings and letters from her daughter to the moving passages of raw emotion. Jennifer manages to take the reader along on her voyage of self-discovery without becoming maudlin or overbearing; she tells the horrific story in almost a matter-of-fact voice yet, just below the surface, you can feel the deep pain and loss.

In July 2009, Jennifer and her children were vacationing in Costa Rica. On a near-perfect day, as described by the author, at the end of an ATV tour, 12-year-old Brooke missed a turn and drove off a 260-foot cliff. Jennifer came upon the scene within seconds, and her life changed immediately and irrevocably. Brooke was gone.

In the days that followed, Jennifer, her two surviving children Paige and Blake, their father, grandparents, extended family, and friends endured overwhelming grief and pain as they questioned, investigated, and searched for answers. Jennifer leaves out almost nothing in this story of love and suffering.

A touching story, this book is a must-read for anyone who has lost a child. Jennifer Scalise has written a very, very beautiful, loving tribute to her daughter Brooke.

I found this book through a connection on LinkedIn that mentioned that it was a Christian book about a mother's grieving process after the tragic death of her daughter. While I certainly do not discount what this mother has gone through, I am surprised that this should be classified as a Christian book. Her daughter, Brooke, was clearly a Christian by what I read in the book; however, the mother did not cope and grieve in any way that I would consider Christian. She consulted mediums, read books about how the dead contact us "from beyond," hypnosis and even had a past-lives regression session with her therapist. While I will concede that this book deals with a terrible tragedy and how one mother discovered her own spirituality, I would caution readers that this spirituality is not based in Christian theology.
