Product Description

On a rainy night seventeen years after his wife's presumed suicide, Garrett Becker sees her walking down the street. A car accident snatches him away from this world before he can reach her. Marina has spent her whole life mothering her brother, who suffers from an anxiety disorder. After their father's accident, they face losing their home-the only place Dylan's fears are held at bay.

Crushing debt is just one of their father's secrets. Old keepsakes lead Dylan to believe their mother is alive and lives nearby. Sara Rochester is a successful chocolatier who doesn't dwell on her past and never expected the resurrection of its ghosts. But after Dylan confronts her, Sara consents to parent the only way she knows how: with money, chocolate, and a gross deficit of experience.

Publisher's Description

A whispering voice at the back of my mind reminds me that I’ve been this way for some time. Dead, that is.

The dead have a very broad view of the living, of actions performed out of sight, of thoughts believed to be private. I would know. Losing both parents is a trial no child should endure, and Marina and Dylan have endured enough. They deserve the one thing I could never give them: a mother’s love.

A mother’s love, and the truth.

My children have believed a lie about me for years and years. After all this time I can still feel their hurt in my heart. But the tether holding me to them is frayed from years of neglect . . . and I have to find a way to make my confession before it snaps.

But when the truth comes out, what other beasts will I unleash?

“Why do we lie to the children?” someone asked me once.

“To protect them,” I answered.

How terrible it is that they need protection from me.

Motherless is completely mesmerizing and compelling and packed full with mystery, betrayal, intrigue, and redemption. This book brings to light the heartache, pain, and destruction that comes with lies-a web of deceit truly holds the liar captive like a spider holding its prey. . .it damages and hurts those around you as they too are caught up in the web of lies. As you continue to turn the pages the truth slowly begins to unfold and what you thought was true really isn't and what seemed like a lie really is the truth. . .

Motherless took me by surprise. . .in a good way. When I first began reading I was slightly...okay, a lot disinterested and must confess that I even sighed once or twice to myself as I thought this would be a long, tedious read - well, I was very wrong! You see, the book is part supernatural which is something I am not that in to when it comes to reading fiction books so from the beginning I was "turned" off. But the more I read the more I devoured and the more I devoured the more I wanted. Erin Healy weaves a most compelling story that is rich in detail and will leave you guessing until the end. . .yes, it really will. It takes a very special kind of author to be able to write a book that completely consumes the reader yet also leaves the reader barely hanging onto the edge wondering and guessing what will happen. . .only to find out that everything that was just read and believed isn't quite as it seemed.

I did have one "issue" with the book and that is that there was mention of alcohol throughout the book. I am not for alcohol and this is simply my personal preference.

Also, in Motherless the writing does not exactly follow a pattern and you will find yourself all over the place, A paragraph will end and the next one will find you a week after the previous paragraph and in a different location. It's fairly easy to follow along, but at times it was a bit much.

All-in-all, Erin Healy does a superb job of creating a spell bounding book. Her writing is quite memorable and will leave you thinking about the story for some time. Motherless is a masterpiece!

** I was given a complimentary copy of this book from BookLook Bloggers for an honest review. All thoughts are my own and no other compensation was received. **

Some of the most memorable novels are the ones that don't follow the structure we would expect. It's like watching the movie, "The Sixth Sense," yes the one about a young boy who can see dead people who seeks the professional help of Bruce Willis, who promises to help him. It isn't until we get to the very end of the movie, when everything we have been led to believe comes completely unraveled as the real plot is revealed. It makes you realize not everything is as it seems. That is just what Erin Healy has managed to masterfully accomplish.

Now don't be misled by the questionable reviews out there. I honestly believe most didn't finish with the novel and see how it all is revealed by the end. I even, wondered to myself more than 100 pages in, how did I get so lost in this story. I wondered if I was the only one, was it worth digging in deeper to finish or should I throw my hands up in defeat and surrender. After all, all of the novels I have read from Erin Healy have been amazing. So I wondered just what is going on.

I don't want to give any of the details away, because those are so precious when you finally discover what is happening, I don't want to ruin it for you. What I will say is press on, because the prize is so worth it. This isn't like any other suspense novel I have ever read and the ending will completely turn you upside down. You will need to press on pass more than 100 pages in the beginning and give yourself a break from what you are trying to figure out. Don't!!! Simply take your time and read it as it is happening. Don't try to figure out anything, just take it as it comes. It will be so worth your time and I honestly believe you will LOVE it as much as I did. I did put it down for a few days while trying to figure out what I was going to do about finishing it. As an honest reviewer, I feel I am committed to providing an honest review of any novel I am asked to review, whether it is positive or negative.

To give you a brief overview of the novel without giving anything away, I will refer to the synopsis that Erin provides on her cover. "A whispering voice at the back of my mind reminds me that I've been this way for some time. Dead. That is."

"The dead have a very broad view of the living, of actions performed out of sight, of thoughts believed to be private. I would know. Losing both parents is a trial no child should endure, and Marina and Dylan have endured enough. They deserve the one thing I could never give them: a mother's love."

"A mother's love, and the truth."

"My children have believed a lie about me for years and years. After all this time, I can still feel their hurt in my heart. But the tether holding me to them is frayed from years of neglect... and I have to find a way to make my confession before it snaps."

"But when the truth comes out, what other beasts will I unleash?"

"Why do we lie to the children?" someone asked me once.

    "To protect them," I answered.

"How terrible it is that they need protection from me."

I received Motherless by Erin Healy compliments of Thomas Nelson Publishers and Shelton Interactive for my honest review. Besides receiving a free copy of the novel, I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions expressed in this review are strictly my own. This is such a great novel because it completely deviates from your standard novel. It doesn't follow scripted patterns you can easily figure out, it has you all over the place because as readers, we honestly are trying to figure it out before it ends. Erin, keeps your guessing. Everything I thought was tossed over the ocean cliff by the time I got to the final chapters. Don't even read the discussion guide questions for clues because you will ruin it for yourself. Keep pressing on despite how difficult the beginning may be. Even I struggled, but I persevered and for once it was SOOO worth it! Erin Healy is by far becoming one of my favorite authors because she doesn't write the novels you are expected, she gives you the unexpected and for me that was so refreshing. Hands down a well-deserved 5 out of 5 stars.

People say that a book is a compelling read. I may have said that about a book myself. But nothing I have read matches the compelling nature of this novel.

Their mother committed suicide at least that's what the police concluded. An abandoned car at a secluded beach. No body ever found.

Then, seventeen years later, their father is in a serious accident. That is the beginning of the recession of the ocean of lies the family has lived under all that time.

Healy deftly tells the story, revealing the truth bit by bit. That was the compelling reading part. Each chapter revealed a little more, yet was a little more confusing. More than once I wondered what the real truth was. And there is an interesting twist, a change in perception that caught me. It wasn't until I read the Reading Group Guide (which contains spoilers) that I realized the deception was deliberate. I too, as a reader was believing an untruth for quite a while. What an interesting literary experience paralleling the plot.

This is the truth: we all tell stories that we want to believe. We tell them for so long that we forget what we really know. Occasionally we convince others to believe them too.

There is much to think about in this novel. What is your story? Is it true or something you have told yourself so long you actually believe it? Are you willing to change your story to let the truth come out? Do you believe what your parents have told you about your childhood? How would you feel if you found out it was all a lie?

I would not really identify this novel as a Christian novel. There is a bit of spirituality at the end but it does not follow traditional evangelical thinking. Nonetheless, this is a very thought provoking novel about the lies we tell ourselves and others and about the places where the spiritual and the physical intersect.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher for the purpose of an independent and honest review.

Erin Healys newest book, Motherless, is one of her best yetone wide-eyed revelation after another to the end. But how do I review it without giving too much away? Its a story of parents protecting their children. Its a story of choosing to forgive, to be forgiven, to live in grace. Its a story of secrets and lies and temptation and sin and misunderstandings and choices that demand to be revealed and redeemed. Its the story of serious mental illness and its lingering effects on one challenged Central California family.

Its also the story of an unusual chocolate shop! (Though Ill have to take Healys word for it that some of those concoctions are edible. Alas, Im as skeptical as some of her characterswithout the opportunity to taste for myself. I may need to go out and hunt for such a chocolate shop.)

Motherless is a emotional, supernatural suspense story that changes direction with each revelation until it coasts to a beautiful stop. The setting is one people dream of, yet the characters whom readers cant help but care for dwell in mild peril and complete confusion. The compassionate message is one all people live to hear. I thank Thomas Nelson Publishers for sending a complimentary copy of this book for my honest review. Its one Im telling people to read.

Motherless by Erin Healy is the suspense filled mystery of the year!

Motherless by Erin Healy is the suspense filled mystery of the year! This book will engage the reader from start to finish as the interlocking characters twist their way through the pages.

Motherless by Erin Healy has earned the title "top favorite fiction read of the year" award on my list! This novel to be released tomorrow (November 1, 2014) will have the reader shaking their head with intrigue as they forge ahead in rapid page turning succession (or swiping for those E-readers out there:). As with her previous books, it is difficult to put Motherless down once you get started.

Now, before I continue, I must confess that I am admittedly an Erin Healy enthusiast. I jumped aboard the "fan" wagon with her publication of the books: Afloat and Stranger Things and I somewhat obsessively watch for her new releases to snatch them up. Why? Because Erin not only entertains the reader with her creative mind, but she also manages to simultaneously bring awareness to a culturally relevant subject matter. The themes within her books are usually hot topic buttons that our society has tried to gently brush under the rug or items that we feel somewhat uncomfortable talking about.

Motherless by Erin Healy manages to present the subject of mental illness through the life of one of the main characters with a respectful authenticity that is very believable. The obstacles that an individual suffering with a mental health illness have placed before them are infinite and immense. The responsibility that a family dealing with an afflicted loved one must bear is communicated throughout the book with inventiveness and truth. The layers of guilt, shame and regret for past mistakes in the handling of the afflicted individuals behavior are also scrolled throughout the character's hearts and minds.

As I began reading the first few chapters of the book, I quickly found myself (for my older readers out there) thinking of the movie, Ghost with Patrick Swayze. The way in which the main character, Garrett is able to see the earthly happenings of his family and minimally convey his presence, despite their inability to make the connection is quite similar to the 1990 film. As the book proceeds, there is a similarity to Charles Dickens' novella A Christmas Story released in 1893, wherein Ebenezer Scrooge finds himself reviewing his life with ghosts from the past. In this classic, of course, Scrooge takes a tally of all of the negative choices he has made while he inhabited the earth and applies them upon his awakening.

Do not be confused by my comparisons, however, this is not a rewrite of a tried and true Christmas time classic. This book is written for today's readers swirling through a wild current of mental health issues as lived out in the lives of several of the family members. Motherless by Erin Healy will take the reader on a compelling, rousing, and soul stirring journey. The message of hope and the constant undercurrent that God's grace and mercy really are enough to cover our inequities is an undeniable communication throughout the book. This work is a mysterious and complicated thriller that you won't want to miss!

Thank you to Thomas Nelson a registered trademark of HarperCollins Christian Publishing, Inc for this review copy of Motherless by Erin Healy. The thoughts expressed within this review are strictly my own. I was not required to give a favorable review of this work; I was only required to read the book in it's entirety and render a transparent opinion.
