David Downing offers a unique look at Lewis's personal journey to faith and the profound influence it ahd on his life as a writer and eventual follower of Christ. Most other biographies of Lewis explore his childhood or his dramatic conversion to Christianity. But it was the rarely discussed period from Lewis's childhood to his early thirties that took him on a tumultuous journey of spiritual and intellectual exploration. It was not despite this journey but precisely because of it that Lewis understood the search for life's ultimate meaning so well.

Reads like someone's Thesis paper. I'm a casual C.S. Lewis fan who simply enjoy his writing and is interested in knowing more about his life story. Not recommended for people like me.

I bought this book for myself and have read not quite half of it. It helps to understand the man that penned so many good books for Christians.

Just finished reading last night; absolutely couldn't put it down! Any book by Lewis stretches my ability to think logically. This book shows David Downing's commitment to telling the Lewis story; Downing gets out of the way, and lets the Lewis "deep thinking" shine through. Lewis's progress from atheism to Christianity was amazingly deliberate, as he thought through each step. Definitely it helps me rethink some areas of my Christian beliefs, and strengthens my ability to vocalize my beliefs in witnessing to others. The Epilogue is also a great challenge to "walk my faith" as Lewis's Christian life is described. I highly recommend this book. Thank you, David Downing, for doing a great job with your subject.
