Publisher's Description

Centuries have passed since civilization's brush with apocalypse. The world's greatest threats have all been silenced. There is no anger, no hatred, no war. There is only perfect peace...and fear. A terrible secret was closely guarded for centuries: every single soul walking the earth, though in appearance totally normal, is actually dead, long ago genetically stripped of true humanity.

Nine years have gone by since an unlikely hero named Rom Sebastian first discovered a secret and consumed an ancient potion of blood to bring himself back to life in Forbidden. Surviving against impossible odds, Rom has gathered a secret faction of followers who have also taken the blood-the first Mortals in a world that is dead.

But The Order has raised an elite army to hunt and crush the living. Division and betrayal threaten to destroy the Mortals from within. The final surviving hope for humanity teeters on the brink of annihilation and no one knows the path to survival.

On the heels of Forbidden comes MORTAL, the second novel in The Books of Mortals saga penned by Ted Dekker and Tosca Lee. Set in a terrifying, medieval future, where grim pageantry masks death, this tale of dark desires and staggering stakes peels back the layers of the heart for all who dare take the journey.

The Books of Mortals are three novels, each of which stands on its own, yet all are seamlessly woven into one epic thriller.

In Ted Dekker's and Tosca Lee's Mortal, Jonathan Talus nears his eighteenth birthday and his ultimate purpose: to become Sovereign of the world. Five hundred years in the future, the world is dead. A virus has wiped away all emotion except for fear, and humanity remains lifeless. Jonathan, being the only child born with life in his blood for centuries, has been giving people life through his blood for nearly a decade. More than a thousand people have been essentially born again. These living people - Mortals - wish to see their savior as Sovereign, the highest position held in the Order, the government of the dead. As Sovereign, Jonathan can bring about his new kingdom of life. But just days before Jonathan's birthday, an evil force rises against the Mortals with a manmade army with obedience for their master engrained in their genes. The Mortals are forced to question their loyalties and decide how far they will go to assure that Jonathan becomes Sovereign.

It is clear that this plot parallels the life of Jesus Christ's on earth. Jonathan gives life through his blood and promises to usher in his new kingdom with the Mortals in it, reminding Christian readers of God's redeeming blood. "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day" (John 6:54 NIV). This parallel is further advanced by the fact that Jonathan, though perhaps the most important character, is never the narrator. Other characters like Rom Sebastian, leader of the Mortals, and Roland, prince of the Nomads, view Jonathan from a distance. His words are wise and his actions confuse these two men many times, but still they follow him, just as Jesus' disciples followed Him without question. This clever tactic allows the reader to view Jonathan with just as much reverence as his followers.

These Mortals are powerful warriors with better sight and reflexes, and the intense battle sequences are marvelously and meticulously detailed, allowing the reader to picture the scenes with clarity. Mortals see the world through perfect eyes, and Rom's and Roland's rich descriptions provide startling passages throughout the book.

Jonathan is enigmatic throughout the story, leaving his followers confused and worried about his state of mind. Sadly, though, little time is spent with Jonathan in the story. Many pages are devoted to Rom and Roland planning ways to ensure Jonathan's ascension to Sovereign, and readers may feel they are attending boring tactical meetings for many pages. The dialogue is stiff, and though the fictional world leaps off the pages, the characters remain flat.

Dekker and Lee successfully create an imaginative world in Mortal but leave the characters predictable, except for Jonathan. Teenage boys will love the detailed battle sequences and Christian teens will find comfort in the familiar parallel to Christ's redeeming blood. - Donna Menke, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
