I absolutely love this devotional. Spurgeon has a way of painting pictures in your mind that you can really hold onto as you go about your day. He helps bring new life to scripture passages and then relates them to you as an individual. The devotional pasages are just long enough, taking about a minute or two to read (and then 24 hours to ponder). When I purchased the book, I remember thinking it was too bad they didn't release a genuine leather version, I had never bought this imitation leather before. I really like it though. It's really soft and has a suade-like feel in your hand. I find myself constantly rubbing my hands across it. It seems well-made so I'm hoping it will last a good long time with a lot of use. The pages are gilt-edged as well, a nice touch, and there is a silk ribbon so you can open right up to the day you need. I'm thrilled with the purchase and am going to buy one for my father for Christmas so I have someone to talk to about that days devotional. I highly recommend it. One thing I should mention is that Spurgeon was a Calvinist, though I consider him a "minor" calvinist because he didn't agree with the entire Calvinist doctrine. I've read several of his books and his beliefs coincide with mine about 95% of the time, the few deviations do not keep me from reading him because he's so inspirational and I'm aware of the calvinist beliefs and can spot them immediately so they don't confuse me. I've been reading this devotional for probably over a month now and his insights and teachings so far are purely Baptist. I've found nothing I disagree with.
This devotional has become my very favorite. I hadn't read any of Charles Spurgeon before. His writing is so rich and powerful. This devotional is worth more than its weight in gold and is a cherished treasure. This would make a very special gift.
This is a publication every Christian should read I love it. I first got it in the 1980s and enjoyed it. Now, so many years later, I decided to get it again and am enjoying it, being older and can appreciate the way the author writes. A must for every Christian. I plan to buy a few copies to use as Christmas gifts.
These devotions, written by the prince of preachers, will have you looking to scripture to know the Savior more intimately. While Spurgeon is certainly not a perfect man, he writes devotions about a perfect God, and you see this in every devotion. You will see God's attributes glorified in a way that not only deepens your knowledge of God, but your love and commitment to Him. These thought-provoking devotions assist in helping us renew our minds in a way modern devotions do not. And I know some have issues with the 19th Century language, but the elegance of that language actually gives more beauty to the subject matter at hand; Jesus Christ. If you want to read devotions that will start your morning and end your evening pointing to our glorious Savior, please pick this one up; it has blessed my wife and I tremendously.
