Located in: Emporia, Kansas Submitted: September 10, 2009 Tell us a little about yourself. I am a teacher in an early intervention program for first grade students who have difficulty learning to read. I am also a farm wife and an Alzheimer caregiver. What was your motivation behind this project? My mother was diagnosed with dementia of the Alzheimer type in 2004, just at the time when our only daughter was preparing for her wedding. What a stressful time! During those emotion filled days I cried out to God for help, and found rich comfort in the guidance and counsel he provided my mother and me. What do you hope folks will gain from this project? My prayer is to reveal God's guidance, comfort and strength to those who are struggling to make the transition from past relationship roles into new roles as caregiver and patient. My mother is also a writer, and has continued to journal her thoughts and prayers five years into her Alzheimer's disease. Quotes from Mom are included in the book, giving witness to the ways in which a lifetime walk with God enables peace despite the confusion and disorientation of Alzheimer's. Mom's writing also grants rare insight into the workings of an Alzheimer's diseased mind. This is enlightening from a caregiving standpoint. How were you personally impacted by working on this project? The guidance God gave me, recorded on the pages of this book, enabled me to make a victorious transition into the role of caregiver. I have learned that although I have had to give up many things in my relationship with my mother, I will never have to give up loving and being loved by her. Love remains. Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? I quote often from Oswald Chambers, C.S. Lewis, and Hannah Whitall Smith. Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: This book is for caregivers of all descriptions. With God at your side you can walk with confidence, even through the Valley of the Shadow of Alzheimer's disease, or any illness or accident that causes a loved one to become infirm.
