After graduating with a degree in economics, he served the C.I.A. for 36 years, mostly as an intelligence analyst of Soviet military affairs, writing intelligence reports for the President, Cabinet members, and top policy makers. During that time, he learned Greek. For several years he was chief of the Agency’s Analytic Training Branch.
