Publisher's Description

Pop Quiz: * Have you ever woken up and felt bad about yourself for no reason whatsoever? * Have you spent time trying to figure out how to get into the popular group at school? * Have you ever been embarrassed by your dad singing in the car with your friends? * Have you noticed that things are starting to feel different than ever before? * Do you change your opinion---or even your personality around different friends? * Do you get overwhelmed with all of the thoughts and feelings bouncing around inside of you? If you answered yes to even one of these questions, you passed the quiz. That means you're a normal girl, who is going through the confusing changes of growing up! Sometimes it might feel like you woke up in a whole new world---kind of like Dorothy, in the Wizard of Oz. The good news is, you're not alone. Melissa and Sissy, the authors of this book, think they can help you figure out some of the big questions in your life. Even if you haven't asked them out loud, chances are you've started to wonder: * Who am I? * What do I want? * What should I do? * Who do I want to be? While they're no longer teenagers, Melissa and Sissy remember a bit about what it was like to be 11 or 12---almost a teenager. But more than that, they talk with girls who are a lot like you every day---girls who are feeling confused or overwhelmed, who are feeling like they're changing in ways they don't understand---physically, emotionally, and spiritually---and they feel like their lives are out of their own control. In this book, Melissa and Sissy, along with girls your age, will share some insight into what's going on in your life. You'll find that you're not going crazy---you're just growing up and becoming the person God has created you to be.

Author/Artist Review

Tell us a little about yourself.  I'm Sissy Goff, one of the authors for Mirrors and Maps. I work with Melissa Trevathan, who is my boss and the other author of the book. Between the two of us, we've been working with kids for over 55 years. At Daystar, I counsel girls from ages 5 and up. I also lead group counseling sessions, which are really just a group of girls that go to dinner and talk. And we have an amazing summer camp that I am so grateful to be a part of. Actually, my dog and I BOTH get to be a part of.

What was your motivation behind this project?  We wrote a book called Raising Girls for parents of girls. As we were writing it, we realized that a lot of the things we were telling parents would be really helpful for girls to know, too. We wanted them to hear from other girls, as well--girls who were may be a little farther ahead on this journey of growing up.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  Basically, these books give girls insight into what is going on inside of them and why things are sometimes so confusing. Our other hope was that girls would finish the book with a better sense of who they are and who God has uniquely made them to be.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  I think this book made me think a lot about my own growing up. I have seen so much more about how God has been using everything--EVERYTHING in my life to form me into what I'm doing and who I am today.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  Frederick Buechner, Madeleine L'Engle, Brennan Manning, Eugene Peterson, Henri Nouwen--to name a few.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  So much of Mirrors and Maps, Growing Up and Raising Girls are what we hope to be a conversation. We believe counseling is really coming alongside someone in their journey to who God has made them to be and offering encouragement and hope. We want you to feel the same thing as you read these book. Enjoy!
