Product Description

Miracles reverberate through history.
Not merely events of the ancient world, they grace our historical moment as well. The annals of the church and Scripture are filled with extraordinary stories of God's signs and wonders. Should we take the time to listen to them, our lives can be immeasurably enriched.
In myriad ways, miracles reveal God's plans and purposes. They speak of His character and love for us.
Some see history solely as a succession of dates and wars and empires--an epic without glimpses of the eternal. But history is more, far more, than this. It is a tapestry gilded by threads of redemption. To look upon them, to look upon miracles, is to be drawn to the place of faith--the realm of a great and mighty God.

Publisher's Description

“For thousands of years, the hope of heaven has called to people through miracles. When we stop to consider their stories, God’s voice calls to us as well.”

In our age of constant innovation, technological achievement, and the sad tendency to see ourselves as the captains of our fate, we may be tempted to make little time for miracles, or give little credence to them. But to live our lives without a sense of the miraculous is to live impoverished lives. Our word for miracle comes from the Latin word mirari, “to wonder.” And well might we wonder when we consider the nature of miracles and their purpose.

It is here that a grand conversation beckons. God has been our help in ages past. He is our hope for years to come. To learn of holy events and people—supremely, to look upon the Savior—is to see the power of God, and how He has always sought to draw us to Himself. He is our eternal home. Miracles point the way there.

Look at a night sky, studded with numberless constellations of stars. Each is a celestial shard of glory—bestowing glimpses of the eternal. Miracles in Scripture are like the stars. They, like the heavens, declare the glory of God.

In these pages are scenes and lives touched by eternity, settings of almighty declaration, moments marked by deliverance, by mercy, or visionary unfoldings of God’s divine intent.

Kevin Belmonte provides learned insight into the profoundly important history of miracles. Miraculous is a richly researched text of wondrous things that have taken place from ancient times to the present.

How do miracles fit into Christianity? Despite abuses on the subject, the story of God's work in this world cannot be told without admitting the reality of miracles. What we have in this fine book published by Thomas Nelson is a tracing of the miraculous by the hand of God throughout history. As the sub-title says, we have "a fascinating history of signs, wonders, and miracles."

In a brief preface we are told what he means by the term "miraculous". Before he launches into miracles in Bible history, he tells us: " Miracles in Scripture are like the stars. They help us glimpse the eternal. And they, like the heavens, declare the glory of God."

In 11 chapters, he traces miracles from creation on through to the Resurrection and then Paul's conversion. If you are well versed in the Bible these chapters will be a review, though a well-worded review. For a newer Christian, these chapters would be a real boon to understanding.

In Part 2 (chapters 12-29) Mr. Belmonte traces miracles in the lives of Christians in the post-biblical era. These make great reading-think challenging biography-that prove his thesis. Miracles aren't for show, they aren't to be manipulated, but they are real, and they are of God.

The first one was new to me. I was not aware of Perpetua, but was so moved by her story. The miracles he writes of were profound and surrounding the events of her martyrdom. Don't think her death nullified the miracles. They did not.

Many other's stories are told. Even George Washington gets a chapter, a really good one. You will enjoy these stories.

Perhaps you will wonder why some favorite character of yours didn't get a chapter, or you might disagree with one he chose. He never, though, promised us a comprehensive volume. Also, the fact that so many chapters could have been substituted only proves his premise-miracles are a big part of God's dealings with us. He tells the story well and without wild excesses. I recommend it.

I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255.

Kevin Belomonte's book Miraculous a fascinating history of signs, wonders, and miracles. Is a collection of Gods work of miracles through time in select peoples lives (chosen by author) including D.L. Moody, Corrie Ten Boom, and George Washington. I especially enjoyed the story of D.L. Moody and his son on a ship that encountered disaster and God used D.L. to reach the lost people on that ship for his Kingdom. "For thousands of years, the hope of heaven has called to people through miracles. When we stop to consider their stories, God's voice calls to us as well." I would recommend this book to all peers interested in this subject/author.

In his new work Miraculous, Belmonte has traced the glorious pattern of miracles throughout human history while employing what has become his trademark, an incredible grasp of poetic prose. Time and again, Belmonte not only informs his audience, but does so through a beautiful journey of language, making his subject matter all the more fascinating. For example, his introduction captures the essence of one of God's awe-inspiring creations, the night sky: "Look at the night sky, shrouded in a mantle of deepest blue, studded with numberless constellations of stars. Each is a point of light, each a celestial shard of glory bestowing glimpses of the eternal" (1). Aside from the strength of its powerful prose, Miraculous contains a comprehensive inventory of miracles as performed throughout time. Not only are Biblical accounts of miracles discussed, Belmonte (in a section titled "Miracles in the Lives of God's People") includes an in-depth examination of miracles for such figures as Augustine, Julian of Norwich, Martin Luther, Jonathan Edwards, David Hume, George Washington, Corrie Ten Boom and Joy Lewis, among others. In addition, Belmonte includes a section on Eastern Orthodoxy, miracles in Africa, and miracles in academia. His final chapter reveals the "God of All Hope" in the midst of our hopelessness.

Not since I read C.S. Lewis' work Miracles have I seen such an emphatic, eloquent argument about the existence and impact of miracles. Our culture is thirsty for a deity to intervene, to prove love beyond our understanding. Spirituality is a popular topic, but yet many demand empirical evidence. Here, Belmonte proves God's "track record" of mysteries, episodes of divine providence where God has protected and nourished His children. God still weaves His promises through the tapestry of our lives. That promise, as Belmonte highlights, is as real and available today as it was in Biblical times. The same God of the Old Testament is still shaping our destinies with his careful hand, carving out for us the path which leads to life and life more abundantly.

I firmly believe that Kevin Belmonte is, without question, one of the finest authors of our day. His writing is rich, full of metaphors and imagery only poets like William Wordsworth could produce. Exhaustive exploration coupled with a deep reverence for his subject matter make this work one not to be neglected. I highly recommend you purchase this book and cherish it, as I do. You too will discover it among the finest displays of wisdom and devotion produced by our generation.

If you're interested in a fascinating history of signs, wonders and miracles, consider reading Belmonte's "Miraculous". As you can imagine, given the countless miracles and wonders that have taken place unto today, it is impossible to document and survey every single event in history and compile it within a hardcover book. However, the most predominant are given attention by Kevin Belmonte. From creation, to the flood, to the Abrahamic covenant, it's all surveyed albeit lightly in the opening chapters. But he moves on to signs and wonders that take place after the New Testament writers.

It's a wonderful piece of literature for those interested in the history of miracles, however, it does lack in scholarly references and appropriate exposition. I found the writer to get lost with quoting too many scriptures without proper expositions, while also quoting too many other writers that it no longer appears to be his genuine work. He committed no plagiarism, and he did have plenty of sources, but he lacks the scholarly refinement to make his piece of literature a masterpiece.

I've received this complimentary book from the Thomas Nelson Publishing House through the Book Sneeze program in exchange for a review. A positive review was not required and the views expressed in my review are strictly my own.
