Endorsements

“This collection of fifty stories demonstrates God’s remarkable faithfulness to us! God has protected, healed the sick, provided strength in very difficult times, and done miracles to show His love for us. This remarkable collection of first-person stories clearly shows the extent of God’s love for us! It is a must read for anyone who is looking for the real source of strength and truth in life!” - Lt. Gen. Paul K. Carlton Jr., USAF, MC, Retired; Professor of Surgery, Texas A&M University Health Science Center; Surgeon General of the Air Force (1999-2002)

“Chaplains serve as a ‘reminder of the holy,’ a bridge from hopelessness to hope; from fear and loneliness to the magnificent Holy Presence that defeats the horrors of conflict and war. These amazing stories reveal the drama of human tragedy magnified in military service and the ever-present, redeeming God in the midst of it all!” - Chaplain Lorraine K. Potter, Maj. Gen., USAF, Retired; Chief of the Air Force Chaplain Service (2001-04)

“Miracles and Moments of Grace raises the bar for me as a believer. Through these stories, I am inspired to follow the chaplains' examples: to face each new day with faith-filled flexibility, to bring the comfort of Christ into someone's chaos, and to be available as God links heaven's heart with earth's hurts. I am motivated to run toward the threat, to face the frightening, and to bring opportunities for worship into the heart of war.” - Marshele Carter Waddell, president of One Hope Ministry; author of Hope for the Home Front: Winning the Emotional and Spiritual Battles of a Military Wife

Publisher's Weekly

Tapping into a treasury of anecdotes from battlefield and crisis pastors through the ages, the author uses her journalism background to collect stories. From Iqbal, the boy who lived through the southeast Asian tsunami aboard a Navy hospital ship, to the barracks in Lebanon where 241 Marines were killed in a 1983 suicide bombing to the World Trade Center and Pentagon on September 11, 2001, Kennedy relates 50 stories, recounted with humor and tenderness. The chaplains are in the middle of the action. One builds a golf driving range in Baghdad; another baptizes a sailor while at sea in a fiberglass can used to store replacement engines for airplanes. Some of the stories are well told, while others need editing. There are few miracles. This book will appeal to the reader attracted to the Chicken Soup for the Soul inspirational series. (Mar.) Author/Artist Review

Tell us a little about yourself.  As a writer, I have worked for magazines and newspapers, as well as in books. My first two books combined science activities with stories of faith for children. I spent several years in my "kitchen lab," with my husband and son as assistants, fine-tuning these fun activities. And we all survived!

What was your motivation behind this project?  One evening, a friend of mine who is an Air Force chaplain told me a story of God's clear provision for him while he was deployed to Southeast Asia. As an aside, he said, "You know, we chaplains have hundreds of these stories!" I knew right then that I wanted to tell these stories.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  I hope these stories will touch the reader's heart as deeply as they did mine. I wept over them, laughed over them and gasped as I experienced the real presence of a God who loves the men and women who serve in our military.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  Writing this book has been the most rewarding project of my entire career and a time of spiritual uplift for me. It was an incredible privilege to share in these amazing moments of God's grace. I am grateful for the chance I've had to get to know these wonderful chaplains who tenderly care for the spiritual, emotional and physical needs of our soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  I love Studs Terkel's books of oral history -- The Good War, Working, Hard Times, American Dreams Lost and Found. In a time before the Internet provided a way for everyone to tell their story, Terkel gave the average American a voice. His epitaph, he once said, should be, "Curiosity did not kill this cat!"

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  For this book, I had room for just 50 stories. They represent only a tiny fraction of the many, many inspiring stories military chaplains have to tell. I wish I could tell every one!
