This book has a little bit of everything; entertainment, intrigue, mystery, romance, historical setting (old world Memphis and New Orleans), and of course, faith.

Opening scripture: Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Matthew 6:21

    1888

Kyle Russell, a Pinkerton agent, was well introduced in Book one and I knew I liked him. Smart, funny, kind and a man of God. He is also an inventor along with his best friend Lucas McMinn. Lucas returns in several small scenes, which I enjoyed. Kyle is on 2 cases really, or about to be. Looking for lost Confederate gold, buried long ago, and following up on the missing escape convict, Will Tucker. Preparing to start the new case, his boss, Henry (who is a wonderful, jolly older fellow with much wisdom), has sent him to Memphis. However, he has given him a few days to test a new invention on the rooftop of an empty building New Years Eve.

Mildred Cope is the remaining of 3 daughters after the older two tragically died along with their mother during a yellow fever epidemic several years ago. She is wealthy, elegant, and beautiful, but so much more! Millies father is mean and does not understand her highly intelligent mind. He has pushed her towards and English gentleman, Sir William Truek hoping for a beneficial business arrangement for himself, as well as someone who can tame his daughter into the sort of quite wife he believes women are meant to be. Millie has agreed to the marriage in hopes of escaping to England to be free to pursue her love of science, and simply be considered an odd American that nobody will care to much about to interfere with.

New Years Eve marks the evening her engagement is to be announced at the Peabody Hotel gala, but she finds herself feeling stifled and recalling a recent trip to her fathers business where she explored a rooftop to sketch the stars and found some interesting items that appeared to be some sort of experiment. She ducks out of the party to return to the rooftop where she meets Kyle Russell. The results are wonderful and the beginning of an amazing relationship orchestrated by God.

I definitely enjoyed the charming characters found in Kyles parents, and the scenery, particularly in New Orleans. It made me want to visit there some day. I did find the capture anticlimactic. There was a lot of build up towards it, and then a simple change of plans from Millie resolved it and it was over. She was well prepared for danger, after practicing. Like book one, the danger aspect fell short for me. I like a bit more danger, nothing crazy, but still, more.

As with book one, there are several typos in this book, which I needed to overlook, since the story is quite good. In fact, the beginning of Ch. 23 has two paragraphs that are nearly identical, but with two completely different scenarios. I personally preferred the first one, but what a huge editing mistake.

I purchased this copy. My opinion is my own and without compensation. I will rate it 5 stars for the story, but would drop a 1/2 star for editing if that were allowed.

    My Review:

Going back and forth between the past and the present is actually a very delightful premise, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have to admit, I found Millie really smart and astute, but I just have to shake my head at how naive she was at times! By the same token, Will Tucker is a most dashing and debonair man, who stops at nothing to get what he wants.

This novel was a treasure hunt, a con man on the run, a guileless heroine, and romance all rolled into one! Millie is a strong woman who is not afraid to go after what she wants. Her father is consumed by guilt of the past. And her fiance is not who he is portraying himself to be.

I did find some of the scenes in the book to be a little contrived and far-fetched, but overall, it lent a different air to the book. There was a little bit of a steampunk feel to the treasure hunt elements, as well as the inventions that were not patented or invented yet. But it was a wonderful novel for anyone who loves an innovational Christian novel.

Kathleen Y'Barbo excels at light-hearted adventure stories with humour and heart. Millie Jean Cope is a bright woman but instead of reading and thinking she is supposed to stick to the more 'feminine arts'. She's a great character because far from being bookish and boring, she's bold and daring and it was a delight to follow along on her adventures!

This is part of a series following the cad and swindler, Will Tucker and the women he leaves behind. He makes his living tricking heiresses into agreeing to marry him and then taking off with as much as he can. The Pinkertons are on the trail. Lucas McMinn from the first book, Flora's Wish, is back in action here. We also meet Sadie Callum, whose story, including her search for Will Tucker, will be the basis of the next book in the series. I definitely plan to read it.

A fun and entertaining story of how God can shine the light of truth on the most cryptic circumstances.

Will Tucker is a swindler, a cad and an all-around bad guy This time he is after Millie's fortune and whatever he can bilk from Millie's father. Pinkerton Detective Kyle Russell is closing in however he doesn't know if Millie is a partner with Tucker or his prey. Of course he finds out the truth, he is a Pinkerton Detective after all, and things take off from there. "Millie's Treasure" is quite a story. It has everything: a detective, a thief and a woman in danger of being swindled out of everything. And it is a romance too. This book is a lot of fun and it entertains you as you keep flipping pages as you try to find out what is going to happen next. Ms. Y'Barbo has a great way of telling the story and moving it along at a nice pace. Her characters are wonderful and she gives them life and unique voices. A really enjoyable read.
