Designed for families with children ages four through ten, this Bible story book takes a panoramic, chronological look at the character of God.
Starr Meade served as director of childrens ministries for ten years at her local church and taught Latin and Bible for eight years in a Christian school. She is a graduate of Arizona College of the Bible and has authored a number of books, including Training Hearts, Teaching Minds. Starr and her husband live in Arizona where she currently teaches home school students and is mother to three grown children and three grandsons.
Tim OConnor began his career in 1975 as a freelance animator and character designer. In addition to painting watercolors of American scenes, OConnor has illustrated various Christian childrens books, including My Bedtime Anytime Storybook and My Pajama Bible.
Beginning in Genesis with The Story of Creation and ending in Revelation with Jesus Revelation for His Church, there are ninety sections, making this a long lasting family devotional. Stories covered include ones normally skipped over for childrens books: Gideon, Davids sin with Bathsheeba, Jeroboams golden calves, King Asa, and Ananias and Sapphiras lies and death. All are handled with age-appropriate summaries, and give a more rounded view of the Bible than other story Bibles. Each section contains an interest-catching retelling of a section of Scripture, eye-catching illustrations, a pertinent Bible verse, and several suggestions for family interaction to embed the relevancy of the story. These suggestions include discussions, brain teasers, praise thoughts, further germane Scripture, prayer starters, plus other ideas.
An example of this: In story 38 about God humbling Nebuchadnezzar, we learn about Nebuchadnezzars dream, or should we say nightmare, how he lost his mind, and what God did for him (p. 131). The illustration shows a rat wondering at a long-haired, bearded man on all fours nibbling at grass. The suggestions for family interaction include a discussion about other leaders and how God worked with them, and prayer pointers for leaders and nations where Christians are persecuted.
Mighty Acts of God is published with a strong cover, durable pages, and is sturdily bound to a resilient spine. It competently meets its aim of providing appropriate and fascinating devotional material for family time. It also will be found useful for Sunday School, VBS, and other Bible teaching areas, as well as in the classroom which follows Christian standards. Relatives and friends will find it an appreciated gift. Donna Eggett, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com

Tracy Porter5 Stars Out Of 5July 12, 2010Tracy PorterMy 4 year old son loves this bible! We read 1 or 2 stories from it every night. Its easy to understand and really brings up a lot of questions about God. Great buy and something to treasure and read over and over.
Kristina4 Stars Out Of 5March 20, 2010KristinaA sort of cross between a Bible storybook and a devotional, every few pages offers a glimpse into a Bible story, gives some related biblical quotes, and presents parents some ideas for related activities or discussion questions. For example, the first story in the book is the story of creation, subtitled "God's Powerful Word Creates." The narrative, while it does retell the story of creation, mostly focuses on what we can learn from the story. Specifically, that God is eternal, there is no one and nothing like God, God alone is "uncreated," God is completely independent, and that God's word is "so powerful that he commands things that don't exisist to exist, and they obey."The author then suggests children work their way through the alphabet, naming something God created. Or, think about a single thing God made, like a human's ear, and ponder how marvelous it is. Or "discuss God's right, as Creator, to make and do with us as he sees best."Other chapters deal with topics such as:* God requires obedience from his creatures* God shows grace to sinners* God judges sin and saves from judgement* God keeps his promises* God chooses to bless us because of his grace alone* God works even through evil* God works through humble means for his gloryand so on. Along the way, biblical stories like that of Joseph, Moses, Solomon, and the life of Jesus are told, but rarely in an in-depth manner. This book is not designed to take the place of a Bible or Bible storybook. What I Like: The concept behind this book is unique and powerful. It's not often modern children's books focus on how amazing and mighty God is. Throughout, illustrations by Tim O'Connor add life to the text through realistic and colorful drawings. What I Dislike: Nothing, really, although more illustrations would open up this book to a slightly younger crowd.Overall Rating: Very GoodKristina SeleshankoChristian Children's Book Review
Jonathan4 Stars Out Of 5March 20, 2010JonathanOne of the most important things that I believe parents can do for their children is to ensure that they are raised with a strong Christian foundation. One of the best ways to do this is to spend time together doing family devotions. Mighty Acts of God: A Family Bible Story Book teaches kids Bible stories about Moses, Elijah, Rahab, Samson, Saul, Paul, Timothy and so many more. The first thing that caught my eye about this book is the illustrations. I love that the illustrator (Tim O'Connor) chose to use classic illustrations instead of the cartoon type ones that have become widely popular. I feel it better suits a family devotional to have classic illustrations. Also, I love that the book has questions for you to work through with your kids after you read the Bible story. This book is written for ages 4-10, but I think the questions are better suited for the older children. One thing I would have loved to see is easier questions or activities for the younger children. The devotionals are very well written, however it's very hard to write a devotional that can keep the attention of both a 4 year old and 10 year old, and I would say it's geared towards the older children.
Laura5 Stars Out Of 5March 16, 2010LauraExcellent Bible storybook! This book is different than any others because it tells the story highlighting God's movement and action on behalf of His people! Every story is Biblically accurate; yet, it highlights ALMIGHTY GOD more than the characters in the story. A wonderful presentation to children! This is useful for families desiring to have devotional time with children. Also very useful to Sunday School teachers and others who are leading the little ones to Jesus! I would buy one for every student in my Sunday school class if I could. Wonderful resource! The author is obviously a gifted Bible teacher in teaching little ones about our GREAT GOD!
