STARR MEADE was director of children's ministries in a local church for ten years and taught Latin and Bible in a Christian school for eight years. She has written several books for parents with young children, including Crossway's Keeping Holiday. Meade and her husband Paul have three grandchildren and reside in Mesa, Arizona.
TIM O'CONNOR began his career in 1975 as a freelance animator and character designer. In addition to painting watercolors of American scenes, O'Connor has illustrated various Christian children's books, including My Bedtime Anytime Storybook (Nelson, 1992) and My Pajama Bible (Tyndale, 2008).
With bright, happy illustrations by Christian childrens book illustrator Tim OConnor and vibrant, engaging narrative by teacher, writer, and Christian educator Starr Meade, Mighty Acts of God readily fits into your familys devotions. Written for elementary school age, this book adapts well to pre-schoolers as well as elementary-age readers.
Beginning in Genesis with The Story of Creation and ending in Revelation with Jesus Revelation for His Church, there are ninety sections, making this a long lasting family devotional. Stories covered include ones normally skipped over for childrens books: Gideon, Davids sin with Bathsheeba, Jeroboams golden calves, King Asa, and Ananias and Sapphiras lies and death. All are handled with age-appropriate summaries, and give a more rounded view of the Bible than other story Bibles. Each section contains an interest-catching retelling of a section of Scripture, eye-catching illustrations, a pertinent Bible verse, and several suggestions for family interaction to embed the relevancy of the story. These suggestions include discussions, brain teasers, praise thoughts, further germane Scripture, prayer starters, plus other ideas.
An example of this: In story 38 about God humbling Nebuchadnezzar, we learn about Nebuchadnezzars dream, or should we say nightmare, how he lost his mind, and what God did for him (p. 131). The illustration shows a rat wondering at a long-haired, bearded man on all fours nibbling at grass. The suggestions for family interaction include a discussion about other leaders and how God worked with them, and prayer pointers for leaders and nations where Christians are persecuted.
Mighty Acts of God is published with a strong cover, durable pages, and is sturdily bound to a resilient spine. It competently meets its aim of providing appropriate and fascinating devotional material for family time. It also will be found useful for Sunday School, VBS, and other Bible teaching areas, as well as in the classroom which follows Christian standards. Relatives and friends will find it an appreciated gift. Donna Eggett, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
