Author Bio

Eugene H. Peterson is a pastor, scholar, writer, and poet. After teaching at a seminary and then giving nearly 30 years to church ministry in the Baltimore area, he created The Message-a vibrant Bible paraphrase that connects with today's readers like no other.

It took him a full 10 years to complete. He worked not from any English text but from the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek manuscripts, to guarantee authenticity. At the same time, his ear was always tuned to the cadence and energy of contemporary English.

Peterson and his wife, Jan, now live in his native Montana. They are the parents of three and the grandparents of six.

I loved reading this version. It really put a new perspective on things. I also liked that it is easy to read. When I started reading it, I did not want to put it down.

CAUTION: "The Message" thru Political Correctness, SERIOUSLY distorts the intended truth in at least 20 known passages. Please do your research, if not convinced. Two examples: * Deletes "sexual immorality." Adds -- "avoids commitment and intimacy:" 1 Corinthians 6:18-20: "Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body." The Message: "There's more to sex than mere skin on skin. Sex is as much a spiritual mystery as a physical fact. As written in Scripture, 'The two become one.' Since we want to become spiritually one with the Master, we must not pursue the kind of sex that avoids commitment and intimacy, leaving us more lonely than ever - the kind of sex that can never 'become one.'[5] [One could conclude that "commitment and intimacy" or "becoming one", not marriage, set the boundaries for acceptable sex.] * Adds words that qualify homosexuality, providing a loophole for committed homosexuals who "love" each other. Deletes "God gave them over...": Romans 1:26-27: "Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion." The Message: "Worse followed. Refusing to know God, they soon didn't know how to be human either - women didn't know how to be women, men didn't know how to be men. Sexually confused, they abused and defiled one another, women with women, men with men - all lust, no love." [This strange wording leaves a loophole for homosexuality to be permitted if it was an expression of love, not lust - which many gay couples claim today. In other words, lust becomes the sin, not the choice of a same-sex partner.]

This is a well made Bible. I bought it for a friend a few weeks ago, and she has almost finished reading it already. I love "The Message". It is easy and more enjoyable to read, and is perfect for those who are seeking a better understanding of the Bible. of the Bible.

The translator of this Bible does not understand the holy spirit field and even botches up the rendering of Romans 10:9 which is the verse that must be understood to receive salvation. Some verses are easier to understand using modern English colloquialisms but one must be careful that the biblical meaning is accurate.

I really like this Bible to read. It is in everyday language which makes the stories come to life...not boring like the King James. I wish I had bought this sooner.

Easier to find chapters and verses than the original. Also makes comparing to translations much less time consuming.

I bought this as a Christmas present for my daughter. She likes the emails I send when I get blessed with a portion from The Message so she wants one of her own! And I like The Message when I get "hung up" on another translation; it simplifies it for me.

A valuable tool to my Bible Study. It helps me understand some parts of the Bible that are more difficult to interpret. I would recommend this version of the Bible to new Bible students. Easy to relate to.
