Publisher's Description

We love to cheer for the underdog and believe to our core that every life makes a difference. And we are right. There is no one God can’t use and no one whose brokenness is too broken for God. We know this is true for our friends when we want to encourage them. Yet, when it comes to the places of our innermost sense of shame and regret, we often wonder if it is really true that God can work all things together for good for those who love Him.

Angie Smith is one who was quick to encourage a friend, but struggled to believe that God could truly make something spectacular out of her broken- ness and disappointments. Responding to God’s leading to both break and reconstruct a simple pitcher, she reflected:

It was as though God were saying, here you are, Angie. You are mended. You are filled with my Spirit, and I am asking you to pour yourself out.

The image of my life as a broken pitcher was beautiful to me, but at the same time, it was hard to look at all of the cracks. I ran my fingers along them and told Him I wish it had been different. How I wished I had always loved Him, always obeyed Him, always sought Him the way I should. I was mad at the imperfections, years wasted, gaping holes where it should be smooth. But God, my ever-gracious God, was gentle and yet convicting as He explained.

My dearest Angie. How do you think the world has seen me? If it wasn’t for the cracks, I couldn’t seep out the way I do. I chose the pitcher. I chose you, just as you are.

Mended takes you on a journey to show how faith lived in the regular events of daily life is all that it takes to be a part of creating God’s picture of redemption in your life and those around you. Your life does make a difference—because of how He is magnified in the cracks.

Endorsements:

Even the blindest heart could behold the gift of God upon Angie Smith. The messages teeming from her life, her voice, and her pen have the capacity to pierce through all our protective barriers. As she communicates, she throws herself into the same lot with the rest of us who struggle with fears and self-doubts and flaws but she leaves none of us languishing there. God speaks hope, help, and healing through Angie and does it so endearingly and even so humorously that you let your guard down and receive, even before you meant to. I first became acquainted with Angie’s story through her blog and remember reading the entire story of her darling baby girl, Audrey, in one sitting. I felt like she was talking straight to me across a small coffee table as she described the heartbreaking news of Audrey’s prognosis, the weeks of pregnancy still to come, and the sacred moments they held her in their arms before God swept her into His. She wrote about how  Audrey would remain in their hearts forever and, through her story, she has remained in many of ours. Once I got to know more of Angie’s journey, I was slack-jawed by the realization that the two of us had our own connection in Christ. The Lord Jesus had called her to salvation as she worked through the Bible study called Breaking Free. What grace to tie two women’s lives together with journeys so different by the same woven thread of redemption! He called me to write that journey out of the restoration He brought from my own brokenness. That He would use it to accomplish something so life-giving in her brought me to my knees. I knew her to be a gifted writer as I read her blog, but it was not long before I saw more than that. I saw God blend a natural giftedness for writing with a clear determination to surrender that gift to one gorgeous end: Christ’s great fame. And then, I also saw a friend. Angie Smith is a true writer- one who has a perspective that comes only from walking through every shade of life and the shadow of death in His tight grasp."

"Whatever high wire you're walking right now, there really is nobody you want at the other end of the line like Angie Smith. And this rare gem of a book is like a steadying, sure hand taking you right into His presence in ways you never imagined. Vivid, profoundly biblical, yet girlfriend real with just-the-medicine-you-need-funny, every page is reviving hope for every woman. Simply, Angie Smith is a Bible teacher for such a time as this."
Ann Voskamp, New York Times Best-selling author of One Thousand Gifts

"Angie Smith has the rare gift to write a non-fiction page turner as good as any fiction book I've read. As her words tumbled out in raw honesty, fresh hope spread before me. Her teachings on fear are comforting, practical, and gut honest. I can't wait for you to read this life-changing book. What Women Fear is one of my favorites this year. Honestly, I think it will stay next to my bed for a very long time."
Lysa TerKeurst, New York Times Best Selling Author of 14 books including, Made to Crave.

"This is a beautiful and tender book that would touch any woman's heart, no matter her age or realm of experience. It is about a relationship so intimate with God that it carves a safe place for crises of faith, for faith proved genuine and for divine callings willed, sealed and fulfilled. Yes, this is one mother's moving story. This one mother also happens to be a true writer. We will hear more from her. Angie, I am so proud of you. May Christ continue to tip the ink jar toward your gifted quill."

My friends and I picked this book out to start a ladies class. Even though I have never taught before, its a great place to start with a new beginning. I suggest it for a great read both alone and with others.

Thanks for the great cover that reminds me, along with my broken and glued together mug, that without the brokeness I could not shine with His radiance through the shatter pieces of my life.

    God is good!

"Mended: Pieces Of a Life Made Whole" is the 3rd book written by Angie Smith. Many are familiar with her through the blog she writes, Bring The Rain. This book is a series of 31 devotions that share a portion of Scripture, along with a former blog post that has been redone in book format. Each chapter gives a feel of a good friend sharing what is going on in her life. There were times I laughed, cried, or was reminded of similar things in my own life. She definitely has a gift of tying it all together into a word picture that brings hope, healing, and help as the reader sees how to use her own cracks and imperfections to allow the light of Jesus to pour out. This is a book I will read again, but I was most impressed by a story called The Canvas in a section at the end called "Foundational Pieces". Make sure you don't just stop after the 31 devotions, but read on through the end of the book. (You know, in a film there are sometimes hidden gems in the closing credits! Same principle here!)

Angie Smith writes about being broken and cracked into tiny pieces by life and then held back into place by God in her book, Mended: Pieces of a Life Made Whole. She talks about the healing work God did in her following the loss of her newborn baby years ago and how even though she feels still broken and cracked in places, God loves her and wants to be glorified in her.

Isn't that the story for so many of us? Even if our pain and our testimony isn't just the same as hers, still we experience brokenness and still God lovingly rejoins our pieces and then uses us. In fact, we're better at reflecting His glory that way---with His light shining through all the holes and missing pieces.

She also has a wonderfully fresh perspective for a long-time church girl like me. Angie Smith didn't grow up doing the Christian-thing, so she writes as someone remembering the discovery of God's Word and His character. I love this about her. It makes what she has to say fresh and full of grace.

Angie Smith's writing is lovingly honest and funny, vulnerable and true. She's truly a storyteller who finds God in the everyday bits and pieces of life. This book is a collection of her more devotional-like blog entries, reworked a bit to fit the format and style of a book. They could be used as a daily devotional and slowly worked through and thought about or read like a normal book. There are no homework lessons or discussion questions per se, but she finishes off each chapter with a brief section called "mending," where she prompts you to think and apply.

I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review and the opinions I have expressed are my own. "Mended: Pieces of a Life Made Whole" is the third book by author, speaker, and blogger Angie Smith. It contains 31 devotionals developed from posts on her blog, a blog she started in order to journal her way through the pain of losing a child. Over time, Angie learned how to let God mend her heart. In this book, she gently leads her readers to do the same.

Each devotional starts with a verse or two of Scripture, moves into the text, and concludes with one or two life application ideas. Angie's devotionals are observations from life that help bring more of God's truth to light. My favorite was one she called "Sketched." In this particular devotional Angie shares how she sketches the future in her mind, but is sometimes confused or disappointed when reality doesn't color it in the way she anticipates or hopes. She is learning to let God complete her sketches His way in His time. She is learning to trust in His outcomes rather than her own.

If your heart is in need of healing and you are looking for a short devotional to nurture your thoughts, I recommend "Mended" to you. I received a complimentary copy of this book for my honest review.
