A Plumb Line for Success, Achievement, and Recognition

The subtitle of Richard E. Simmons’ book “The True Measure of a Man” reflects the essence of its contents: “How Perceptions of Success, Achievements & Recognition Fail Men in Difficult Times.” Simmons writes to help men faced with fears and doubts come to terms with living in unprecedented times.

Simmons writes with clarity. The format lends itself to three levels of reading:

    • Definitive topical headings encourage a quick perusal of the content.
    • Simmons straightforward writing style and poignant relative stories engage the reader in a more careful reading or study for assimilation and application.
    • The profound nature of the narrative adds to the value of the book as a resource for follow up, review, and further reflection.

Probing and soul searching illustrations and examples tackle the difficult challenges of guilt, fears, self-imposed unattainable expectations, and insecurities. Simmons gives common sense practical insight into a man’s value system, and shaping his character through the use of meaningful true to life applications from the truth and principles found in the scriptures. I especially enjoyed the many well documented profound quotes and thoughts from recognized for their leadership and character.

“The True Measure of a Man” is an important book for any man at every stage of life.

A complimentary copy of the book was provided for review purposes. The opinions expressed are my own. As reviewed for Midwest Book Review.

Being manly is often strived for in today's culture and has been arguably since men were first created by God. Our mainstream culture has different ideas of what makes a man a real man, but what is really the truth? Does it involve having brute strength? Does it involve riches? Sex? Victory? Material possessions??? Richard E. Simmons III's book The True Measure of a Man tries to reveal the answer to that great question.

The True Measure of a Man measures what some think is manliness and reveals what is ACTUALLY manliness. There are different lessons and testimonies revealed within this book from various minds like Blaise Pascal. Mr. Simmons also analyses why some males have these false ideas of manliness and what to do about them.

For the most part I enjoyed this book. The thing I liked the best about Richard Simmons III's book is when he looks at why the mainstream culture believes what it believes about manliness; so true! I like and dislike how he provides quotes of famous writers and speakers; I thought he might have used too many quotes. I also like and dislike his use of scripture; I don't like how he 'paraphrases' each scriptural use. This was a very easy read and if a male reader actually takes this book seriously it can be quite convicting. He shares my similar idea of what is wrong with our society today! There are more boys inhabiting adult male bodies than men being men. Overall I thought this was a great book with great ideas. For those interested in hearing more from the author personally, I'll be having him on my Blog Talk Radio show on January 10th at 3 PM Central Time.
