I am a homeschooling mother of nine. My oldest two have just finished Pre-Algebra (with A averages) and will begin high school this fall, while my youngest (to school) are a pair of preschoolers. I have a toddler and newborn as well. With that being said, one can understand that my time to teach math (which I consider to be the most time-consuming subject to teach) is limited by my need to mother a busy house full of kids. With regard to math curricula, finding just the right fit for my family has been a challenge. Over the years I've tried several different math programs, so I do have a little experience. I should also add that I'm a former public school elementary teacher who loved teaching math! So why did I choose MCP for my third, fourth, and fifth graders? Simple. It meets my goals of 1. Building Confidence in Math Skills, 2. Having SHORT Daily Review/Drill (so we can move on to the lesson and then the child can work independently), 3. Fostering Independent Learning, 4. Building Understanding Through Concrete Experiences (with the use of hands-on manipulatives where appropriate). The description for the product is misleading. It says that this program is geared for students who are struggling in math, but a more accurate description might be, "for students who desire the time to focus on making deeper connections with math, and building support for those connections through graduated lessons in each area of mathematics." In other words, instead of most programs which skip around from topic to topic, so that on Monday you might have a lesson in measurement, and Tuesday is geometry, and Wednesday is subtraction with borrowing, etc. MCP Math sticks with one topic at a time, gradually building your child's confidence in that skill area (my #1 goal!) Not challenging enough? Bump up to the next grade level or two. Like those math programs with a lot of time-consuming review? Then skip the rest of this review, because you don't want this program. Are you like me, desiring a math program that gets the job done without a lot of fuss, that allows you time to teach other subjects besides math, that gives your child the time it takes for math concepts to solidify? MCP Math might be a good fit for you. It depends on what you're looking for. Additional points to consider...Do you NEED the teacher's lesson plan book to go with the workbook? Not necessarily. But it is REALLY helpful as far as reviewing previous concepts, targeting problem areas, extending the lesson, and it can be a good place to jot down teaching ideas and reminders for your child. Some claim there isn't enough review, but that's easily solved by keeping a post-it list of concepts to keep reviewing with your child until they're solid. Does the program call for a bunch of math manipulatives? No. BUT I do incorporate the use of the manipulatives that I already have on hand, as I truly believe that concrete experiences build understanding and confidence. MCP Math lends itself nicely to the use of those manipulatives, like fraction tiles, geometric figures, a Judy Clock, an abacus, Montessori bead chains, etc. And one of the nice things about integrating the use of manipulatives with THIS program is that you only need one type of manipulative at a time (as opposed to the programs where you skip around constantly!) Bottom Line: This program gets the job done without my having to invest an exorbitant amount of time teaching math to each child, without my having to read and prep beforehand (if you order the teacher's manual), and most importantly, without spending our "math time" playing games, singing songs, learning new ways to teach old concepts, or drying my child's tears. With this program, my kids love math because they know they can do it! *One thing I would improve upon, if I could, would be the construction of a sturdier student workbook cover with heavier weight workbook pages. Hope my review helps you! :)
