Born in 1800, William Holmes McGuffey had a remarkable ability to memorize and was capable of committing to memory entire books of the Bible. In many one-teacher schools, students' ages varied and few, if any, textbooks existed. In 1835, McGuffey was asked by a publishing company to create a series of graded Readers consisting of stories, poems, essays and speeches. This audiobook is based upon the revised version of the McGuffey reader. Emphasizing the importance of phonics and vocabulary for beginning readers, this audiobook of the sixth reader features stories, poems, essays and speeches that will develop advanced vocabulary and thinking skills. McGuffey's Sixth Reader is appropriate for approximately 10th through 12th grades, and beyond. Unabridged audio CD; approximately 12.4 hours; 11 CDs; read by Robin Field.
