Matthew Henry's commentary in general is quite the Literary biblical examination classic. This review is on his "Concise" commentary, which is an abbreviated edition to his larger 6 volume set. The reader must remember that Matthew Henry wrote his bible commentary almost 400 years ago. He died as i recall after finishing his commentary on the book of Acts. All the commentary of the subsequent books AFTER Acts, were not words of his own, but a few of his prominant students and apprentices of scholastic biblical study. I do reference Henry's commentary from time to time, but i prefer the Baker's bible commentary better. Also, I'm thoroughly disappointed in the extremely cheap binding, poor printing quality and inferior paper this book was created with. The publisher did a horrible job. With just light use of the book, I've already had to re-glue to binding. I think an old yellow pages phone book would last a lot longer. The content of the Mathew Henry's commentary however is still a time honored classic that is a handy reference for any student of the bible. For the cheap price of this book alone, i would still recommend it. However, i think the publisher should be arrested for making a sloppy binding as well as a poor hardback cover.
I was looking for help getting a deeper understanding of scripture so I wanted an all inclusive commentary. One or two books weren't sufficient because I read all over the bible. This commentary has met and surpassed my expectations. I love it. It has been really helpful.
